Haiti Relief Update

October 8, 2008 - Over a month after Haiti was hit hard by a string of tropical storms, the death toll has reached over 800 and more than 1 million people have been left homeless. Power to Change asked for your help during this time, and we thank you for your generous support.

Partnering with churches in Desca, Cabaret, Messailler, and Guiton through our associates in Haiti, we have been able to hand out emergency response packages containing rice, beans, spaghetti, cooking oil, canned fish, toothbrushes, toothpaste, laundry soap, hand soap, deodorant, and feminine products. A total of 215 packages have been distributed in the Cabaret area.

Power to Change was recently made aware of more than 80 families who have been relocated to Haut Damier after losing loved ones and all of their personal property. They are currently residing in temporary shelters and tents, awaiting any kind of help. We are evaluating our efforts to assist people in this kind of need.

As well, many aid programs have been unable to reach the severely damaged community of Cazale, because access to that area is almost impossible. There are over 500 families in critical need there. Please pray that the team can have the means to provide help as soon as authorities open up the roads.

Even before the devastating tropical storms struck, Haiti remained one the least developed countries in the Americas. Approximately 80% of the population lives in poverty, and within the last year two million Haitians fell into food insecurity as a result of dramatic price increases.
