“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich”
(2 Corinthians 8:9).
As a refugee child in postwar Europe, I often pressed my nose against a store window yearning for the colored candies I saw displayed. My mouth watered but I had no money. I had to trudge back empty-handed to the overcrowded refugee camp with its porridge, potatoes and bread.
Later, as an immigrant high school girl, I wanted desperately to belong but I often felt left out. Everything about me was different: I spoke broken English, I was a klutz in sports, I had braids and goodwill clothing. Even my sense of humor and my values were different. The feeling of I-don’t-have-what-it-takes has dogged me well into adulthood.
Perhaps that is why the truth of God’s grace is such a comfort to me. No matter our station in life, God has only one way for us to gain his favor – through Jesus Christ and His death on the cross.
Personal merit doesn’t figure. In fact, when we come with an attitude of I-don’t-have-what-it-takes we’re most open to receive the riches of God’s grace. Grace that welcomes us with open arms. Grace that whispers words of endearment. Grace that calls forth the best in us.
Sometimes I feel like a small girl who discovers that the whole candy store belongs to her father and she may go in and help herself freely. I have done nothing to deserve this favor. It is all by grace: Great Riches At Christ’s Expense.
Wanting a daily reminder of God’s abundant grace I’ve put this little note beside my computer: This is a Grace-Day. I will immerse myself in the grace of our Lord Jesus. I will treat myself to His grace for me. I’ll be a grace-giver in prayer and in my walk and talk. I will grace someone’s life today.
Father, according to the riches of your grace, strengthen me today so that I shall be able to see others with your eyes and love them as you love them. Amen.
