??god Of This Present Moment”
“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?…Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”
(Matthew 6:27, 34)
When Elaine heard the doctor’s prognosis she was shocked. Ill health coupled with other family problems was too much to cope with. She felt herself sink into the quagmire of depression. She blamed herself for past mistakes; she dreaded the future.
At this time a friend gave her a card that suited her need perfectly. She read:
- “I was regretting the past and fearing the future.
- Suddenly God was speaking: “My Name is ‘I AM’.”
- I waited. God continued:
- When you live in the past, with its mistakes and regrets,
it is hard. I am not there. My Name is not ‘I was.’? ? ?
- When you live in the future, with its problems and fears,
it is hard. I am not there. My name is not ‘I will be.’
- When you live in this moment, it is not hard. I am here.
- My Name is ‘I AM.’“? ?
“God is the God of the present moment,” Elaine kept repeating to herself. “The past and the future belong to him. All I need to think about is this present moment.” With that she began to notice blessings that had eluded her: roses by her bedroom window, the song of a bird greeting the morning, how good it felt to cradle a cup of hot tea in her hands…
~Father, thank you for scattering happy moments into each day. Make me alert to them and give me a trusting, thankful heart.
