“Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
(John 4:14)
In southern British Columbia we don’t often worry about water shortage. If anything, we grumble about the frequent rainfall, especially in the fall and winter.
But since my visit to Africa, I shall never grumble about rain or take water for granted again.
I was visiting my daughter in Swaziland and one day when I turned on the water tap, there was a sizzle of air emitting a few drops of water. Then nothing. “The water is turned on once a week if we’re lucky,” my daughter explained. “When that happens, I fill every single pot in the house. You can never be sure when it’s turned on again.” I glanced around; we were down to the last pot. I panicked.
I wanted to wash my hair. I needed to wash my hair. I might as well forget about that unless I walked half a mile to the river. But then I shook my head no. You could hardly call the ribbon of water as wide as two of my fingers flowing through a wide sandy stretch a river. “Unless it rains soon, our water supply may give out altogether,” my daughter said. “It’s a constant worry to the people.” How dreadful, I thought. Having to worry about something as basic as water.
Sometimes in life, I’ve hit a dry season. I feel as dry as that water tap. My natural resources have run out and I wonder how I’ll make it through another day. But you know what I’ve found? Christ’s resources never run out. When I turn to Him, he offers me his resources. But it’s up to me to drink and to act as if I have received the resources. To step out in faith knowing I will have what I need to make it through the challenge before me. Jesus said, “The water I give you will become in you a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
~Father, help us to remember that in Christ we have all the resources we need to handle each challenge that comes our way today. Right now I open myself to you and invite you to pour in your living water. Amen
