“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”
(Isaiah 43:18,19)
When I’m tempted to think that life has given me too many challenges, I remember one of my patients at the Senior Care Home where I worked.
Due to complications from diabetes, Mrs. Reimer had both of her legs amputated. A devastating blow, still she didn’t give up on life.
In fact, she was determined to master every difficult adjustment to live life as a double amputee as normal as possible. She learned how to transfer from her bed to her commode by wiggling her bottom across a padded board. She took great pride in putting on her own prostheses. Once after she’d taken a few faltering steps with the aid of her walker, she sat back down on the edge of her bed and beamed up at me, “Imagine me at age ninety learning to walk again. Now that’s something!”
Instead of majoring on what she had lost, she made the most of what she still had. Like her eyesight. Often I would find Mrs. Reimer reading a book (she loved biographies), working on a jig saw puzzle, or crocheting Christmas tree ornaments. “If I make one snowflake each day,” she said, “I’ll have over 300 to sell at the bazaar.”

Mrs. Reimer showed me that when we view adversities as adventures, life becomes not only bearable but exciting. We’re never too old to learn something new.
~Father, thank you for the gift of life and for this brand new day. I want to make the most of it.
