“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;???
(Matthew 5:44)
In my on-line Bible study some of the participants were talking about how hard it was to choose to be kind when people ‘pushed their buttons’, especially when they did it on purpose.?
I was reminded of the testimony of a native man who came to one of our evangelism training conferences. He was a new Christian. He told how he had been made a foreman on his job at the sawmill. One of the white men was resentful and refused to work for him. He would not do what he was told.
In the morning, this man and his wife were reading their Bible and came across the passage that says we are to bless our enemies. (Matthew 5:44) He puzzled over that. How could he bless this man? What did that mean to bless someone?
They prayed and he decided that every time the man refused to do what he was asked, he would bless him by doing his work for him. This went on for some time until the white man couldn’t stand it anymore and began cooperating. In fact they became good friends.
~“Lord I pray that you will give me grace to be agreeable, sympathetic, loving, compassionate and humble. When I have been hurt, help me to hold back retaliation or sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, Lord, I pray that I will pay back evil or insult with a blessing and then that I will inherit the blessing you promised. Amen.??? (1 Peter 3:8,9) The Message, NASB
