Radically Dependent Upon God
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
(Proverbs 3:5,6)
“Jonathan, I’ve been robbed!”
My son glanced at my left side where my purse had been and his face blanched. Our passports, tickets and money, my driver’s license and every piece of identification that I owned had been stolen!
“My passport and ticket too?”
I nodded. I had insisted that I, more travel – wise than my 16 year – old son, would carry all of our important papers. And now they were gone. Stranded in a foreign country thousands of miles from home without even enough money to make a phone call or to use the public washroom. What a feeling of helplessness!
The situation called for radical dependence upon God. As I told Him that we were completely in His care, peace replaced the earlier panic. I felt as though an arm had been placed around my shaking shoulders and Someone had said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here with you.”
And it was very evident that God was working. A man and woman from our home town in Canada just happened to be at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany standing in front of us in the same lineup. They offered to drive us to Bonn so we could have interim passports made.
Even though it was a holiday weekend our travel agent in Canada suddenly felt a strong nudge to return to his office where he met Jonathan’s brother. Hurriedly he wired two more tickets to Germany. And so it went, one miraculous event after another. We returned home just two days late, my heart bursting with gratitude to God for his faithfulness to us.
Still, now that we were safely home again, I wanted the airline to reimburse our tickets. But they insisted I must hand in the old tickets first. How could I when they were stolen? So, I kept writing and they kept declining. What happened to being radically dependent upon God? I didn’t see any need for it now. After all, I could handle this on my own. Right?
Wrong. Once more God had to show me that I was completely dependent upon Him, not just when I am in desperate need but at all times.
Four months after the robbery, the Canadian embassy in Germany sent my purse. Inside were both passports, both tickets, and all my I.D. papers. Hurriedly I sent off the old tickets. Our reimbursement came two weeks before the airline went bankrupt.
~Father, thank you for taking a keen interest in all of our affairs. I want to trust you more in all of life, the big things and the little things.
