God?s Goodness In Discipline

Please open your Bible and read:
(Hebrews 12:1 – 15 )

As parents, we may say to our children, “I’m going to spank you to teach what’s right, because I love you.” The child might think, If you really loved me, you wouldn’t spank me. We often feel the same way when God disciplines us. But He really is being good to stop us from wrecking our lives – He wants to get our attention and help us to grow. As the Hebrews passage says, discipline doesn’t feel good initially; it hurts. Yet, if we learn to accept it and be trained by it, our lives will be full of God’s righteousness and peace.

We often walk through life thinking that, while God is good to some people, He seems to have left us out. The reality is that when we’re so enmeshed in other things, we don’t see God expressing His goodness toward us. So we complain, “If You were good to me, You wouldn’t do this; You’d do that,” and we miss out on what He is doing in our lives. The Lord’s goodness isn’t simply a little pat on the head that says, “Well, bless you”; it is far more powerful.

In (Psalm 23:6), when David writes, “Surely, goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,” he is expressing that God’s blessings will pursue us every day we are alive – they will track us down with purpose. The Lord desires to pour out His goodness upon us – in our toils and trials just as much as in our ease and comfort. He has stored up goodness for those who trust and obey Him because He loves to lavish it upon us.
