Cosmos And Late Bloomers

(Philippians 3:13 – 14, NIV)

Cosmos is a tropical American herb of the thistle family. Brightly colored, rayed flowers top long slender stems decked with feathery leaves. When I sowed a package of wild flower seeds, yellow cosmos was among those that sprung up. One day early in September I went out to look at my garden, and I saw these gorgeous pink flowers! They were the cosmos, and they thrilled me.

Why were they just now blooming? The nursery catalog said that cosmos bloomed all summer. But that summer had been burning hot droughtsville! No wonder the cosmos had taken so long to bloom!

Some Christians are like that. Stumbling blocks come, trials of life assail. Years go by and they do nothing to serve the Lord. My dear mother was like that. After she married my father, she didn’t attend church for years, although she always sent us children to Sunday School. But when my dad received Christ at the age of 51, he and Mom got into church and started serving. Mom led almost all the junior girls in her Sunday school class to the Lord. So it’s never too late to start making up for lost time and making your life count for Jesus.

We all have one or more talents with which to serve the Lord. In my mother’s latter years she ministered to comfort and reach others. I myself am more like a cosmos that blooms all summer, because I turned my life over to the Lord when I was 24. And I have found numerous ways to serve my Lord. I have served in many churches as pianist or organist or choir director. (Right now I’m on the piano!)

I’ve also have served as a full-time writer for the Lord for years, a home missionary, a Bible teacher, a child evangelist and children’s worker, a tract passer, a counselor–whatever the Lord has put in my hand and heart to do. And oh, what a wonderful life I’ve enjoyed in His service!

But it’s never too late to start serving the Lord and being a sweet fragrance for Him to others. Why not ask Him, “Lord, what would you have me to do?” That’s what I ask Him every morning when I report for duty!

The Apostle Paul said, “Forgetting what is behind…I press toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13 – 14, NIV).
