Safety

Written by stacy

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
(Proverbs 18:10)

I remember a time I thought I would freeze to death.? Four of us college students were driving from Moose Jaw to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada? in a prairie blizzard. An icy wind rattled our small car. Sheets of snow streaming past the windshield, blinded the driver. The car skidded and slid into a snow bank. We managed to dig ourselves out.

A short while later, another snowbank claimed us. With a lot of shoveling and heaving, we got the car out once more. It was dark when it happened a third time. Standing beside the car and chilled to the bone, I remember thinking, people freeze to death in this. I had only one overwhelming desire: to be in a warm place.

We did eventually make it to our destination. The friendly lights of the Ukrainian Bible School? beckoned us. We stepped out of the storm and into a brightly lit room. The warmth enveloped us like a blanket. Smiling faces welcomed us. “You must be hungry,” a plump woman said. Moments later she placed before us platters of perogies smothered in a sour cream sauce. Later, as I snuggled under the warm covers in my bed and listened to the howling wind rattling the windows, I kept saying, “I’m safe here.” What a delicious feeling!

When caught in a storm what we need most of all is a refuge, right? A safe place where we can hide to wait out the storm. Many times since that night, when life seems cold and threatening, I’ve run for safety into the presence of Jesus. He opens the door and invites me to come inside. It’s warm and cozy and bright in his presence. As I open the Bible, his Word, it’s like a table is spread before me with choice foods. He bids me come and eat. He whispers his love to me. No matter what’s happening on the outside of my life, in this inner sanctuary, I’m safe.

Do you feel overwhelmed by what’s happening in your life right now?? Then run into the presence of Jesus. See him welcoming you with open arms and a warm smile. Spend some time reading his affirmations of love recorded in the Bible. Imagine snuggling together. Soak up his pleasure. Then go into the day knowing that he is with you and inside you to give you strength to weather the storm.

~Father, I thank you that you are with me in trouble. When I call, you will answer me. You will rescue me and show me your salvation.
