His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things, Come and share your master’s happiness!”
(Matthew 25:23)
On Larry King Live, Billy Graham was asked, “How do you want to be remembered? You are known all over the world, your crusades have attracted hundreds of thousands wherever you’ve gone. You have spoken with presidents and world leaders. Many people credit you for their changed lives. What do you want people to remember about you?”
“That I’ve been faithful,” Billy Graham replied. “I was a farm boy not particularly gifted. I don’t know why God chose me for this particular work. I just want to be faithful to his calling.”
Not fame or success, but faithfulness.Wow! How incredibly liberating a mind set like that is! I thought. I want to be like that: a person who can go about her business unmoved by praise or blame. A person whose aim is not to impress or to prove anything, but to please God and be faithful in all He has given to do.
A dear friend of mine died recently. At his memorial service people said things like, “He made me feel accepted and understood.” “He conducted his business with integrity.” “He kept his word.” “He was fair.” “He had it right: he lived with the end in view.”
How do you want to be remembered? What legacy do you want to leave?
Like Billy Graham and my friend may we be faithful in what God has given us to do.
~Dear God, I want to be faithful in all that you’ve asked me to do whether it’s preparing meals, looking after children, caring for the sick, or working in my community. Give me enough encouragement to keep me at it.
