Hindering God?s Will

Written by Stacy Wiebe

Please open your Bible and read:
(Romans 12:1 – 2)

The way to get God?s best in life is by following His will. Surrendering our body, mind, and soul acknowledges that He has Lordship over us. In effect, we are saying, ?Whatever You want, Father, I want.? What would cause us to be outside His perfect plan?

The influence of friends and ignorance of godly principles can affect our walk. Deliberate sin can also stop up our ears to His voice. But the primary hindrance in our spiritual walk is self – will: we know what the Lord wants but refuse to follow. Man?s fallen nature prefers having its own way. Even Jesus wrestled with self – will in Gethsemane when He asked His Father if another plan of salvation existed – one in which they would not be separated. (Mark 14:36) Ultimately, Jesus accepted the Father?s plan. When we do the opposite and seat ?self? on the throne of our heart, we are in open rebellion, telling the Lord, ?No matter what You and Your Word say, I?m doing what I want.?

Sometimes self – will grows not out of pride about our own judgment, but from doubt or fear. A believer may feel God is too busy with ?world problems? to be overly concerned about him. As a result, he resolves to do his best without help. At other times, Christians avoid learning God?s will because they fear what He may call them to do. In either case, believers can miss out on God?s best by accepting self – will over the Lord?s way.

For those prepared to surrender self, God promises a clear plan as well as the courage and strength to carry out His will.
