Proactive or Foolishness?

I’ve been thinking about this and wanted to get your comments on it. This is partly my thoughts and partly inspiration from the comments below in this blog (BTW, thanks so much for everyone commenting — this site is Alive!)

Anyway, here’s the quick and blunt question: Are Christians being proactive or foolish in regards to the Da Vinci Code?

On the one hand, I know the book and movie paints Jesus, Christianity, and the Church in a light that has not been the historical belief of millions.

On the other hand, the book is a novel. Get over it.

Full disclosure: I have not completed the book yet.

Personally, I’m sitting on the fence but leaning to proactive. Well, really I’m standing on the proactive side while leaning on the fence with one arm hanging over on the foolish side.

It’s just a novel. It’s entertainment. But boy have I not understood actual truth because I trusted a novel or movie. I need more coffee before I can think of an actual example. Maybe you have one?

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this. Say what you want…but play nice. I’d sure hate to have to give someone a “Time Out”. ;-)

Before I read the book, I wondered what is all the hoopla about and was under the impression that it’s just a book why make a big deal about it. Then I thought the Bible is just a book but look how it has the power to change people’s lives. Then I read The Da Vinci Code and realized the power it could have on people. I personally believe we need to be proactive.

I hear you Rob and Leah! I was of the same opinion….it is just a novel, fiction, get over it!

Unfortunately though, many people base their thoughts and values on what they hear or see in the media. Listen to any two women talking about a soap opera and you will quickly realize that they have gone from watching a tv show to believing that these are real life situations.

Having said that however, I do believe that Christians should be proactive, and be prepared to discuss and share the truth about who Jesus is, his death and resurrection, in a time where everyone will be talking about the movie. It is when we become critical, defensive and arrogant in attacking Dan Brown that we truly become foolish….God loves Dan Brown and sent His son Jesus to die for him….we need to be very careful to remember that!

deebee: you said that many base their thoughts and values upon what they hear or see in the media. Similarly, this could also be said about novels, books. This invokes that you believe people may believe many a thing about what is written/said by others.

Your example was to listen to 2 women talking about a soap opera, and hearing how much they believe these are real life situations.

Similiarly, is reading the life of Jesus, which is written about by others, and talked about as if real life situations not about the same? We read the Bible and many believe it.

  • Leah says:

You are right Sarah but there is actual historical evidence to back up what the bible says. I think to ignore the book and pass it off as just a book would be hazardous to all who are seeking. Yes, all this hype is benefitting Dan Brown’s pocket but I like to think that God knew this was going to happen way before Dan Brown ever did and it was all in God’s plan to expand His kingdom.

  • Sonchild says:

One thing that this book should accomplish is for all Christians to become intensely more knowledgeable about the Word of God. If we as Christians know the real thing, then we can point out what is counterfeit. Seems that it is often easier for people to believe and accept fiction, fables and fantasy rather than the unvarnished truth of God’s Word!

You are so right on Sonchild! Thanks for your comment! And I totally agree! That it is good for us to better know what we believe and why we believe it.

In answer to your question about the Bible being just a story written about by others Sarah, in fact, the first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, were written and based on the accounts of eye witnesses who had walked with Jesus and seen both his life and death on the cross. Similarily, the Resurrection was recorded as fact. Had this only been a story, the Roman government would have been quick to dispell it as just a myth.
