The Right Focus

Written by Dorothy Brown

“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statues of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple??? (Psalm 19:7).

We’re bombarded daily with negative voices – in the media, the sales people, the entertainment business. It’s hard not to be caught up in the fog of negativism. How can we stay hope – filled and faith – filled?

By practicing the discipline of feeding on God’s Word daily. Reading it, memorizing it, studying it, applying it. That way we will get God’s perspective on things.

Jesus practiced the discipline of using God’s Word in every situation. To each of Satan’s temptations he said, “It is written…and then he quoted a Bible verse. (1) In his home town of Nazareth he began a sermon by reading a Scripture and then adding, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (2) He answered the contentious Pharisees by saying, “Is it not written in your Law..” (3) To the young man who asked him a question, he said, “What is written in the Law. How do you read it?” (4)

Let’s begin the day with God’s Word, not the newspaper. Let’s end the day with God’s Word instead of the television. We will feel a lot better about the world situation and ourselves if we do.

~Dear God, thank you for giving us your written Word, a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our paths. As I read it, illumine my heart. When you expose some sin in me, I want to repent of it and turn away from it. I want to obey you in all that you say to me today. I want to let the light of your truth shine through me and brighten the corner where I live. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If you don’t know where to start, I would suggest begin by reading the Psalms.
(1) Matthew 4  (2) Luke 4:14 – 21  (3) John 10:34   (4) Luke 10:25,26

    Dearest Lord God,
The way to stay filled is to constantly seek you, be still before you, and allow you to be the very center of who and what we are. I confess there are many times I step ahead of you. Today, I stop, sit and wait for the the stillness … I await the prescious filling of your Spirit to fill my heart, mind and self. I pray for others who need your infilling this day. I pray for those who daily stay outside that circle of love and infilling. I pray that they are willing to receive you totally and completing. You are rest for our weary souls. Amen

God help each of us to come to you each morning for renewal and stay with you throughout our day by actively seeking you and close our day with your promises. Annie

  • Renee says:

Thank you Gen and Annie for your prayers. This particularly touched me today. I want to stay within the circle of God’s love however I struggle. I love him but have a hard time staying disciplined and obedient. I am one of those negative thinkers and it is a discipline to fight the fight with God’s word. Lord remove those walls that keep me from having a deeper relationship from you. Show me your love and help me to be a a disciplined and obedient child. Make me a servant of your peace and love. Help me today to overcome negative thoughts with your Word. Amen.

It will soon be time for us to begin the Advent Services in our church. On one of these four Sundays we will celebrate Hope. It is a gift that we receive as we wait for God’s will be be revealed.
If we appropriate Hope each day, we live in anticipation of what God is going to do, and the people and circumstances
that He will provide in our lives to bless us.
Hope deferred makes the heart sad. If we can acept Hope as a gift from God each day, we will look forward to His blessed promises.

God’s word : everything will pass away but the word of God will live forever . May our heart richly dwell in God’s word . May our eyes and ears read and hear and heed what His commands are. For His word gives wisdom and breathe life to all who choose to trust and apply it in every thread woven in his circumstances . Father God we thank You & grant me to claim your promises with discernment.May You grant us all thy abounding grace to comprehend , and thy mercy to give us the strength to be found faithful in the calling You have given to each one of us . In your precious Name , Jesus we all pray . Amen .

  • Thank god for this inspiring word that we can glean from
today for spiritual enrichment. God truly is my strength
and power and he is the one who makes my way complete in
him. Putting God’s word as a top priority in our everyday
lives is a must! The busy, fast pace of life seem to be
having its way in most of our lives. We are all in a battle
that has been set against us, in competing for our attention. It is so much distractions that is target against
our focus on God and his word. Knowing this truth, can help
us be more determined than ever before to seek God with our
whole heart. Determined to be faithful in always reading his
word without ceasing. May God hunger and thrist for him be
increase more and more in all of your lives, Praise God!!!

    Shirley,

Thats my prayer too. Thank you for your encouraging prayer. I think its always good to keep God’s Word at the center so we don’t loose our distraction and the calling that God has for each of us. I think the best thing is continualling laying aside our selfs to live each day in Him. Thank you again.

This holds so true to my heart right now. I have justed moved out my home from a 11 year marriage. My husband has filed for divorce and I have struggled with this decision he has made. I have let taking care of myself become a low priority and as a result I am physically, emotionally and spiritually drained. Two nights ago I had come to a place that if I didn’t get a grip on my life I would have an emotional breakdown. I began making a plan to take care of myself. From that point on and I realized the number one thing I can do for myself is spend time in God’s word every day. It is the one thing that will give me the strength to go on. It is because of his love and word that I can go on each day while not knowing what tomorrow brings. I pray that all women come to know about God’s love and how his word will and can feed their souls

  • Pearl says:

Thank you Lord Jesus that your word, the Bible, gives us the right focus.
Thank you that I’ve made it a habit to awaken each day with the Bible.
There’s been many times I’ve woke up in a bad mood and had my whole attitude turn around by reading your word.
Thank you Lord Jesus for the positive direction.
Bless all who read today’s devotional.
May we all continue to use your word for your glory.
In Jesus precious name I pray.
    AMEN.

    Dawn,
It sounds to me like you are in a place very similar to where I was recently. I’m still working on things, but I wanted to reassure you that your outlook is right on. Sometimes all we can do is look after ourselves. I made the mistake however, of tyring to take care of myself, by myself. I failed and still do sometimes to ask God to help and guide me each day. I finally figured out that God wants to guide me and carry me through these tough times. He is the only thing that ever truly helps me. I hate that humans are so flawed, but I’m so grateful that God is here to guide and help us despite our flaws. There is nothing you can do but pray for your husband. Please take care of yourself. I will pray for you. You will get through this.
    God bless.

  • Beverlon says:

God bless everyone! Dawn and Susanna 3 years ago my husband of 12 years up and left me and our 4 daughters. It was the most devastating time of my life. You know how you think that it could never happen to you. I was the only one praying, full time job, full time mother, full time wife, I was just full time everything. We even got a divorce and a week after our divorce he married the woman he left us for. For a week I couldn’t do anything to or for myself or my girls. I thank God for my mother and my sisters that got me out of my bed and prayed with me, read God’s word with me, and praised God with me. God is the answer. In spite of, I still loved my husband and wanted it to work. But I first worked on ME! God wanted my attention. Well ladies to make a long story short, my husband and I are remarried, he’s come to know the Lord as his personal savior, he’s a better husband, father, and friend. Sometimes God takes us through to get us where He wants us to be. I could not have made it without God on my side and it was not an easy road. May we all stay focused on the Lord.
