There’s a new documentary coming out about the Jesus tomb

I know this is not related to your original post, but if you are interested in film or in religion in general you have to check out the Jesus Family Tomb. This totally amazing movie is coming out talking about Jesus as a husband AND a father!! Unbelievable. But what I like about the movie is that they use only experts to verify the studies. They actually have DNA and statistical proof that 1) Jesus existed, and 2) had a son. It’s truly the discovery of the millenium.

Hi everyone, thanks Rina and/or Karen for the link. Note that the same IP address was used for both posts, so likely Rina and Karen are the same person. Split personality? Please don’t post multiple comments, it is misleading to post as though it were different people posting.

EDIT: Here’s some relevant news links on the “Jesus Family Tomb” story:
    - Scholars, clergy slam Jesus documentary (Associated Press Story)
    - Who’s writing fiction here? (Response of Paul L. Maier, Ph.D., Litt.D, who wrote a fictional book with similar themes to this “news” story.)
    - New film claims Jesus buried in Talpiot (Amos Kloner, who oversaw excavation of the tomb, says of the “Jesus Family Tomb” story “It makes a great story for a TV film,” he told The Jerusalem Post. “But it’s impossible. It’s nonsense.”)
    - The Jesus Tomb? ?Titanic? Talpiot Tomb Theory Sunk from the Start (Comments from biblical scholar Dr Ben Witherington III)
All of these hit the “Jesus Family Tomb” story pretty hard indeed.

I haven’t done an extensive reading about this yet, but some preliminary observations (Edit: In addition to what’s noted in the articles above):

“What readers of The Da Vinci Code don?t know is Mary Magdalene?s real name. From the Acts of Philip, a fourth century work … Professor Fran?ois Bovon (Harvard University) has determined that Magdalene?s name was ?Mariamne.?”

First of all, why should we trust a fourth century work (that means it was written about 300 years after Jesus death!) instead of the canonical gospels, written 30-50 years after Jesus’ death? The “Acts of Philip” has no historical merit. There’s also an implicit deception in using Fran?ois Bovon and Harvard University here; someone reading quickly will say “Wow Harvard University says this is true”, whereas that is not the case at all; all Bovon was saying is that in this one 4th century text, Mary was referred to as Mariamne, not intimating that the 4th century text in any way proves that was her “real” name.

“The degraded [DNA] samples would not provide enough material for y-chromosome testing. But … [t]he tests demonstrate that the ?Jesus? and ?Mary? from this tomb are not maternally related. That means … [t]hey were not siblings. They were not mother and child or father and daughter. They were unrelated. People buried in tombs are related in one of two ways: either by blood or by marriage. The results revealed an explosive possibility: that these two individuals, Jesus, son of Joseph, and Mariamne, were likely related by marriage.”

Again we have some bad leaps of logic here. First, there were a total of ten ossuaries found in the tomb, so there is no reason (other than preconceived ideas) to necessarily link the “Jesus” ossuary to the “Mariamne” ossuary. Even if the “Jesus” and “Mariamne” (note again, not “Mary”) were related, they may have been distantly related, not necessarily by marriage. Second, another underlying assumption here is that “Jesus son of Joseph” and “Mariamene e Mara” (literally “Mary the Master”) are the Jesus and Mary of the Bible. Both Jesus and Mary were extremely common names during biblical times. It’s really quite a stretch to link all of the six names to the Bible; having to do things like ?Yose? or ?Yosa? ? a nickname for ?Joseph? makes the whole enterprise rather questionable.

There is a new e-book which is published by Lulu, com which will tell you more about the code used by Leonardo than Dan Brown’s novel and it makes sense!

  • Brian Rudolph says:

In Old Testament law, it was clearly stated that a priest, if he were to take a wife, the maiden would have to be a virgin. Jesus, being a priest after the order of the Levitical priesthood, would have most certainly kept this law. And since Mary Magdalene was a repentent harlot, there is in no way Jesus would have betrothed her. A warning to those who want to believe this fictional absurdity; a Bible prophecy states that in the last days men would have “itching ears” to believe a lie. The whole purpose of this film is to bring down Christs’ divinity, to make him out to be a mere man. Jesus, being the Son of God, could have for himself a thousand maidens if he wished. Why then would he take a harlot as a wife?

  • Brian Rudolph says:

Concerning “The Tomb of Jesus” documentary…What these scholars conveniently fail to mention, is that the name Jesus was a common name in those days, as well as the names Joseph and Mary. Further, anyone with common knowledge of DNA would know that it would be seriously degraded after 2,000 years. And besides that, you would need Jesus Christ himself to make a DNA match. All of this hub-bub is nothing more than a political effort to trash the right wing Christian establishment as we draw closer to election day. Is this the best they can do? Sad really.
