“…afterwards…came a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12).

Do you equate the voice of God with a shout? Do you expect Him to roar His commands? Do you believe His very nature requires that He bellow?

If your answer is “yes,” perhaps you have discovered one reason why you often hesitate to invite Him into close relationship with you. We resist intimacy with those who consistently shout, roar or bellow.

I recently observed two sisters in an unguarded moment. Both girls are at an age where their relationship is frequently strained, where arguing is the more common form of communication. But on this occasion, the younger girl leaned close to her sister and whispered something into her ear. Both girls immediately dissolved into shared giggles! Communication had been swift, understanding mutual, and intimacy — though short-lived! — established.

To hear the whispers of God, we must determine to develop an attitude of attentive listening. Activity, sounds (even good ones like uplifting music) can easily distract us from the solitude and silence needed to hear the whispers of God. What precious message we might hear if we only leaned close enough to hear those whispers.

Prayer: Father God, it’s not easy in my busy world to sit quietly. Not only is my life filled with distractions, but I find myself valuing activity more than solitude with You. Please help me set aside time daily to just sit in Your presence and listen for Your whispers.

Questions to Ponder and Discuss: Why do you think we resist sitting quietly before God? What three things can you do this week to plan for such time and see it happen?

I remember when God put me underneath HIS wing to hear HIS heartbeat and HIS voice right after I had a hip replacement.
Before that surgery, my life was busy and even though I thought I took quite time for HIM ,HE showed me differently.
It is so important in our spiritual life to have the quite time with HIM.

It is difficult for me to stop and close my ears to all of the other sounds that occur in my life. I have had two occasions when I felt that God spoke through a time when I was awakening from sleep. The words that came to my mind were not words that were part of my vocabulary. I felt that they were whispers from God.

We all need to take time t listen to what GOD is saying to us. I am guily of not listening for to long. Which is something I have to work on. I pray that I can listen harder to hear what HE has to say to me
