“It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert. It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers. The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter” (Psalm 74:13 -17).
This proclamation of God’s amazing power shines as a beacon to guide me out of fear.
Acknowledging that it was God who accomplished these mighty acts reminds me of His limitless power. With acknowledgment comes the realization that if He could do these things, then my current situation is certainly not beyond the scope of His power.
We need a personal litany of praise to recite when overwhelmed or afraid, a list of the ways that God has intervened in our lives. My list would begin like this:
It was You who carried me when the pain of Crohn’s disease was unbearable.
It was You who provided our daily bread, when the weekly check didn’t come for months.
It was You who changed an angry and desolate child into a caring and hopeful young man.
It was You who forgave the sin that threatened to destroy. It was You who healed hearts.
It was You, God, only You.
What has God done in your life? Take the time today to remember and record the great deeds God has performed in your life.

I love these devotionals — they always seem to hit me just where I need it. I’m sometimes afraid to read them, thinking, “Oh no, I’m going to be told what I’m doing wrong” — but it never turns out like that, I’m always shown something to marvel at.
It was You God who entered my heart when I prayed at the age of 12.
It was You God who let my life crash around me so that I would find the path to You.
It was You God who walked with me and gave me what I needed to live, even during those years of not knowing You. Simple things that yet show me Your attention, which took me years to see:
- You gave me $5 which I found in the lint filter of my dorm dryer so that I could get a cab to the airport to fly home one Christmas
- You brought the young man driving aimlessly in the early dawn to take me to the airport one Easter when I had read the bus schedule wrong
- You showed me the postcard which was on the street outside my new apt, making me eligible to receive free weatherproofing for the ramshackle attic I was moving into
And yes, You saved my marriage, you gave me the tools to step back and allow your grace in my life so that I could stop demanding the impossible of my husband.
You gave me the child that would help me understand my mother and allow me to forgive her. And then
You brought me through 2 miscarriages and made possible a pregnancy which was carried to term at the age of 46.
You brought my family to this old parsonage, so that we could live mold-free, saving my first daughter from constant ear infections and sparing my 2nd daughter spending her infancy surrounded by mold.
I know that You are working your power for my family’s current situation. Thank You!
Wow! Yesterday God in my devotional time, God showed me Nehemiah chaper 9 which begins this way: “Now on the 24th day of the month . . . and then describes a long list of things God had done for the Israelites and how He was faithful despite their hard-heartedness and rebellion. Yesterday WAS the 24th of the month, so it surprised me a little because it felt so personal. My entire day was filled with a long list of amazing “coincidences” (little miracles) — things to be thankful for — just in ONE DAY! Then this morning I read this! I am going to go make my list right now. I’ll start it with this . . . 1. He brought me out of a life of drugs, alcohol, prostitution, and much more, into a life of happily serving Him, married to a wonderful man, with all my needs fulfillled in more ways than I could ever ask or hope for. He has been there for me in both the hard times and the good times. HE IS AWESOME!!! I will praise and thank Him forever!
It IS YOU, Dear Lord! And? If we Praised every moment of every day for rest of our lives? There’s still be more to Praise about! You still part a “Red Sea” in each of our lives daily..bringing blessings when there seems to be NO EARTHEN way!! May all of us realize the blessings and shout gratitude towards Heaven!!!! And, let us not overlook the little daily blessings, in the midst of many challenges, that make our days bearable because you never leave, nor forsake us Hebrews 13:5!!!!
It was you that brought me from death to life through salvation.
It was you that saved my marriage that was hopeless.
It was you that brought me through a difficult pregnancy, and saved my son in my womb.
It was you that restored my sight when I suffered from physical blindness.
It was you that set me free from the workplace so that I might enjoy retirement.
PRAISE YOUR HOLY NAME!
Yes, Amen – it is almost as if this were written for me! It IS Him that has carried me through years of Crohn’s Disease – and has provided and will continue to provide for me through his infinate wisdom, mercy and grace! There will never be enough words to describe the wonder and awe of His love for me! Hallelujah!!!
Amen to that! All week long God has been reminding me of His continued faithfulness to me throughout the seasons of my life and in thinking about all of this it gives me so much hope for the future!
