Dogfighting & Cockfighting

Written by Darren Hewer

RoosterCockfighting. The word itself suggests it should not be spoken in polite company. But lately it’s been plastered all over the news.

First came NFL football player Michael Vick’s recent arrest for running a dogfighting business. His arrest and subsequent suspension by the NFL was the top news story for several days.

Then the Humane Society filed a lawsuit against Amazon.com to prevent them from selling cockfighting magazines. For those who are blissfully unaware, cockfighting involves placing two trained roosters in a ring and having them fight (often to the death) while onlookers bet on the “winner”.

Was it right for the NFL to suspend Michael Vick indefinitely after his guilty plea? What about Amazon.com, should they be required to pull cockfighting magazines from their website? And what makes these “sports” attractive to some people? The recent attention may even make these activities more popular than ever before.

I agree with Linda Sked. Animals learn their behavior from man. They learn to survive by doing what is expected of them, again by man. I got an american stratfordshire terrier (pitt bull) she was the sweetest dog. She would lick my chin when I asked her for kisses. When we first got her my husband warned me don’t put your face near her, she will bite you. She never once did. Dogs and pets in general emulate the behavior they are taught and expected to perform. I also feel that punishment should include jail time. The fines and a slap on the wrist is “chump change” to the people who get caught. Jail time would teach them that it is not ok to treat animals who have feelings as though they don’t matter. They matter to God! They should matter to all of us.

Blame the humans, not the animals. Pitbulls, originally, even though bred to fight, were among the most stable temperamented dogs around. After all, in the middle of a fight, these dogs were expected to STOP fighting at a command or a hand on a collar.

Dog ‘breeds’ are humanly created. Styles of body, temperaments, vicious or otherwise, are cultivated by the people who breed, and the people who acquire the dogs.

Those of the “macho” camp think having a vicious dog makes them “cool”.

The dogs are only what peopled have created or molded. Until people change (or are imprisoned), the creation of ‘fighting machines’ will go on (especially if there’s is profit involved).

It’s like everything else, if there was no market for a product, the product either would be discontinued, or changed.

The Bible tells us that a man’s heart is evil. Nowadays, ‘evil’ is allowed to flourish in people’s hearts, and be fed, under “freedom” of expression, life-style, etc. What used to be evil is now ‘acceptable.

God’s creation was good; it was Man that fell; the ‘afteraffects’ of that was inflicted on the earth, but it’s not the animals that know the difference between good and evil.

I also believe that we should not be cruel to animals but I’m more concern with how these same type of animals are molden of children or people that they come into contact with and leaving them either dead or seriously injured. Cockfight rather we want to believe it or not have been going on for along time in the world. It was a type of sport that folks went to and bet on, is it right, No! but it happened over and over again and no one made such a big deal about it then. If the crime fits then the person definitely need to pay for their wrong doings but what about these animals that are killing and hurting human beings for no reason???

  • I agree with Linda.
Such sports are cruel and God is not pleased with those who abuse his creation in such ways. That is very poor stewardship as animals owners.

    Abortion is more cruel.
It is like tearing apart the human life God created to satisfy a person’s selfishness.

Speaking of banning magazines, if they are required to pulls cockfighting magazines (not a bad idea) then they should be required to also stop selling pornography and all of their sexually explicit material.

    Some will scream censorship.
Except our forefathers never intended the First Amendment to protect those who are cruel to animals (fights of various sorts).
Our forefathers never intended it to protect monsters who are child molesters (child pornography).
Our forefathers never intended the First Amendment to protect perverts in the pornographic magazines, perversts who produce and promote that trash. The First Amendment was not intended to protect those who broke God’s laws.

In America’s early history, even as late as Abrahan Lincoln,
the Holy Bible was considered the second handbook for cases in which the state and Federal laws were not clear. Lawyers were in their training instructed to know the Bible well as it’s principles would be used in court when man’s laws were unclear about something.
In fact the same founders of this great country, the USA, who wrote the first Amendment also wrote laws against the things that are found in sexually explicit magazines.
So it is obvious that the First Amendment was never intended to protect those who have the most perverse morals, whether it be animal fights or sexual perversions.

    So yes.
Ban the cock-fighting and dog-fighting magazines
but then also ban other ungodly material!

We are told in the Bible that we are here to be caretakers of God’s animals. The people who fight any kind of God’s animals for sport or profit should be put in prison, not just given a fine, and a slap on the wrist. I’ve been bitten trying to seperate my own two dog’s who just simply don’t get along with each other, I’ve even had stiches, but I got them apart without serious ingury to either one. I, being an animal lover cannot stand , God forgive me, these type of people. The lawmakers of this country should stand up and take notice. Then,if the average person knew how these nasty people get these dog’s to learn to fight, they would be sick. I’ve heard that they use small dog’s, puppies, and cat’s and kitten’s as bait animals. That is why in some area’s peoples dog’s and cat’s come up missing. The people who bring the bait animals to these dog fighter’s are paid for this unGodly action. Stand up people and see that these types of people are put off of the street’s. To me they are just as nasty as child molester’s.
