I Am Adopted

When my niece and her husband adopted Billy, adding another member to their family of three children, I asked Billy how he felt about it.

He gave me a big grin. “I’m adopted,” he said proudly, “and now I get correction like the other children.” I laughed at his innocent remark, but I realized there’s truth in his words. Paul the apostle writes in Hebrews, “My son do not make light of the Lord’s discipline. And do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”

As a foster child, Billy could not be corrected as the other children in the family were disciplined. Social services forbade it. But now that he was a bona fide son, he received discipline along with the other children. Correction is part of belonging to a good family.

God says if we are in Christ, we are in the family of God. We have family privileges. And one of the privileges is correction. So, let’s not get discouraged when trials come. God will not give us any more than is necessary to produce the Christ-like character in us.

~ Father, thank you that You work all things together for my good so that I will grow and mature and be conformed to the likeness of Your Son (Romans 8:28).

Questions: Why does God allow trials to come into our life? Has God “corrected” you recently? How did it make you feel? What lesson can we learn from Billy?

I agree with Fran. When my brother died at 2 1/2 when I was 3 1/2, I didn’t understand it then. In my early 20’s, in early recovery, God gave me the gift of understanding. My brother was a gift to us for awhile. He went to heaven when his work was done. The same is true of the baby I miscarried in 1982. God did a wonderful work in me, pulling me back from the darkeness through that, even though it hurt like crazy :-{, :-}.
