Mitt Romney is one of several potential candidates in the running to be the Republican representitive in the next United States election. The battle is heated between Romney and several others, including John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, surprise Iowa winner Mike Huckabee, and Internet phenom Ron Paul. Although Romney suffered loses in Iowa and New Hampshire, he recently won in Michigan, putting his goal of becoming president of the United States back on track.
Mitt Romney however faces a potential roadblock to his nomination: He is a devout Mormon who was once a bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thus he holds to a controversial religious faith that makes some people uncomfortable.
Often people vote for (or against) candidates for questionable reasons. Recently Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign took a turn for the better after she cried during a campaign stop. Did people vote in her favor because of this reason? The question in this case is, should a candidate’s religious beliefs be important factors when deciding whether or not we vote for them? Why or why not?

Our approach is very simple- we detail the mandate Joseph was given from the Bible, then look at how well he did to fulfill that. We discuss Twelve Doctrines that his followers are known to believe in and compare those with the purpose of his mandate- The Book of Mormon.
I think that people should not judge the candidates by the religion they profess, but their sincerity alone. I think Barack Obama is arguably the best candidate in this regard.
As a devout Christian and faithful follower of Christ and his teachings, as well as a concerned citizen of our Great country I truly believe that the doctrines that frame who we are as a nation such as the Constitution and our Bill of Rights were centered around Biblical teachings. I believe that the Bible is the Word of God. Therefore any teachings that ad to or take away from, what I consider to be sacred text, not only cannot be scriptually based but as I see it are blasphemy. To have a President that believes in teachings other than that which is in the Bible would be unconstitutional. So although these may be beliefs that are frowned upon by some they are my own and God centered as well! I will pray for Mr Romni as I do for any non Christian.
AMEN Greg & Ann! I’ve already cast my vote, and I’ve done some research on the candidates. I don’t judge Mitt Romney personally for being a mormon, I don’t believe that the religion he follows is truly christian. It’s a cult, always has been, always will be.
A person can live an exemplary life by living according to biblical principles and values and yet not be a Christian. I have been thankful for every day of George Bush’s presidency knowing that He is a believer but I don’t expect that every candidate is going to be a spiritual man or woman. I don’t appreciate candidates who “use” their faith to win votes by putting it out there front and center to influence. I find I mistrust that person. And I don’t appreciate candidates who seem to label themselves to somehow connect with Christians but they are shallow at best and fake at worst. The Founders were wise when they separated Church and State in governance. However, most of those men, within themselves, feared God or were believers. That is a good model for our times as well. Some people say oh, it doesn’t really matter who is President because they can’t really change anything anyway…I disagree! One of the first things President Bush did when he got into office was to sign an executive order to prohibit the use of US funds given to the UN to fund abortions around the world through UN agencies. He did this and a myriad of other things under his control because of his value system which was guided by his faith in Jesus Christ. It might not happen again for a long, long time but oh how wonderful it has been these past 8 years. I only hope and pray that our next President will be a man or a woman who lives out of a true faith and/or the biblical values that we all appreciate so much and so desperately need to guide us.
I vote according to the candidate’s stand on the major issues. As an evangelical Christian, I have to consider abortion, same-sex marriage, religious freedom, and ‘no new hate crime bill’ (we are already protected by the Constitution) as the most important issues. Mike Huckabee seems to be the only candidate who fits the bill.
I am amazed that anyone today would be surprised at the possibility of a Mormon becoming President of the United States.
In many circles it is said that the Mormon establishment has a secret agenda to rescue or take over the government of the United States one day. In support of this belief, reference is made to the number of mormons who hold and have held high positions; even behind the scene, in all previous administrations going back for many decades.
It is interesting that sex, race, age and religion are playing an important role in this election. None of these factors should, however, stand in the way of the best candidate being elected. We can only hope that whoever is elected will surroound himself or herself with people of the best caliber and highest integrity in the country.
Although I am not terribly excited about the upcoming election, I think McCain(pres) & Huckabee(VP) would make a very good team.
Amen Darrell G.
Christians are people that believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Mormons just believe that he was a good teacher. It is a false religion and we don’t need that in the white house.
As a fellow believer in Christ, I don’t believe in the Mormon religion or Joseph Smith. I would vote for Huckabee of which is a devout Baptist before Mitt Romney. Mormonism is a false religion and we should all know that by now.
As a Christian I would like to know that the leader of our country is making decisions with the greatest adviser of all on his team. Although I am not a Mormon, I think that Christians should support a leader who has strong Christian values. Although our country was founded on faith in God, there has been movement in government that has made those of faith the bad guy. I appreciate seeing someone running for office who is not afraid to admit he prays. Bravo …
The Lord is still in charge…we need the man to represent us with a christian attitude…keeping “Christ” first…and loving all nations impressing them by showing the love we must and will share with each other in “America” !!!
“God Bless You” !!!
Mr.Romney is the only one that have heard talking about bring values back to this country which I think have been missing for thrity years or more, which has drove this country into the shape it is in.children now a days don’t have a religious up bring and family values they don’t have time to teach their children these things they put them in front of t.v or playstations and thats what they learn.Who wins this office needs to work on these things, like Mr. Bush said to get in office about Christmas and than sent out cards wishing happy holidays.Christians need to stand together and stop this handful of people from taking GOD out of everything. GOD BLESS
God bless Mitt Romney. It is extremely important ,to me, that I vote for a man of character and Christian belief. My vote goes with Christ
I believe that it may be possable for anyone of any faith to be pres. and do a good job if he remembers to leave his church out of his office his values should be important so he should not leave them aside and it is alright for him to get advice from the church but it would be roung for his church to dictate what he should do
As Jerry Falwell , we are not sending a sunday school teacher to the whitehouse…. Our principles are based on freedom of reliogion. Mitt has said he believes in God, but us as Christians arent suppose to judge him, there is only ONE judge…
