Neglecting the Little Things

**Are you too busy for God? http://womentodaymagazine.com/chat/askus.html

Kathy had neglected the little things. This season of her life was hectic. It wasn’t possible to keep on top of all the things that she usually tended to. Something had to go so she let things slip around the house and yard. At first no one noticed. Yet as the weeds took hold outside and the paperwork and the closets were ignored inside, she could feel the growing chaos around her.

The same thing happens in our inner lives when we neglect the regular care of our spirit. We begin to feel the growing chaos within. The reality of our lives becomes contrasted against the promises of our faith. We become discouraged in our spiritual journey.

God’s Word reminds us to be careful about what we ignore. In the book of Hebrews we are given reminders not to ignore the great salvation God has provided for us.

“… Do you think we can risk neglecting this magnificent salvation?…”
(Hebrews 2:1- 4 The Message)

It’s so easy to be caught up with the busy things of life that we overlook tending our inner lives. Then we often find chaos in our heart and mind and wonder why God seems distant. During those times we will most likely find our Bible starting to gather dust. God’s Word is nourishment for our souls.

If your life is chaotic and your spirit is dry…if panic is becoming more often present in your heart and mind than peace… check what you are neglecting. Make a beeline back to God’s Word and to fellowship with His people.

Make a fresh determination and declare the words that David declared so long ago in Psalm 119:16…

“I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.”

Keep God’s Word at the very core of your life. As a Christian you simply cannot risk living otherwise.

~Father in Heaven,
You know how easy it is for me to neglect Your Word. I confess that my Bible stays closed far too often. When You feel distant I blame You. Forgive me Lord. Help me to learn to love Your Word in a greater way. Open my eyes to what You have to say to me through it. Reveal Yourself to me in new ways. Help me to make this a priority in my life. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.

Question: What one thing can I change this week to make God’s word a bigger priority in my life?

Dear Lord Jesus, so many of your faithful daughters here are hurting physically or emotionally, or struggling with marital strain, or waiting with anxious spirits for medical reports that threaten their sense of peace, or carry the burden of financial woes . . . each with her cross feeling so heavy and in need of relief. You, Lord, beckon us to come to You, those of us who are weary, and You promise to give us rest. Rest for our broken spirits, rest for our tired bodies. You are like a fountain of refreshment for us, where we come to empty our vessels, that You would fill them with Your living water, renewing us for our continued journey. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that You are our never-ending supply of strength and grace on our walk with You! Please, Lord, take each precious daughter who comes to Your well here on this blogsite, seeking Your mercies in her life, and touch each one with Your mighty and powerful hand, that each would know that she has been touched by the Master’s hand! Bring healing where it is needed, rest for the wearied, marriages under Your divine authority, financial hardship to freedom. May Your grace be so evident, Lord, that all would give glory to You!! For, only You are worthy of all praise and honor and glory! Amen!

  • Dianne says:

Amy, I have the same problem with willingness to change.

There is a Bible verse that I have held onto for encouragement about this which says that it is God who creates the will in us and then makes it possible for us to do what He wants.

I lost the exact chapter and verse because I accidently erased the CD on which I had saved it, but it has appeared in one of these devotionals within the last couple of months, and perhaps one of you ladies can help by telling us where we can find it (I haven’t come up with the right search terms on BibleGateway to find it today).

    Thanks again :-}. Dianne

  • Marilyn says:

Cindy, just love your comment! :)

  • Dianne says:

Chris and Sharonb., thank you :-}.

DonnaL., “Someone once said to me ‘How can you spiritually feed others if you aren’t feeding on God’s word yourself?’ So true….” Yes, so true.

Cindy, is this the song that starts out, “God, you are my God, and I will ever praise You,” and talks about following God’s ways “step by step?”

    Prayers for all :-}.

  • Dianne says:

Judy D.! This is a problem I have, too. This “eats up my time,” too.

  • Linda R says:

Good Morning Ladies, this is the same devotion we had yesterday, Right so maybe The Lord Would Like Us To Make This A Day Of Prayer.
Patti49 is now in the hospital awaiting to have a biopsy done on her liver around 11am Oklahoma time so she really needs our prayers today,
Poor Sharon is sitting on pins & needles waiting for results from a second set of mammograms done on Thursday & extra nervous as she did have cancer 13yrs ago but The Lord healed her so she too needs our prayers. Cheryl M needs wisdom in making a very big decision in her life right now, Linda J is experiencing a lot of pain right now, being overwhelmed with the busyness of life and having her nanny quit on her so she too needs our prayers. Then just as I was writing this Amy wrote in and Dear Jesus I just bring Amy to you right now Lord you see her heart and how she is asking that you would help her have that desire in her Heart to want to save her marriage Jesus I just pray that You will just minister to her right now, speak to her heart Lord and help her to remember those vows she made when she got married and I Just commit her to you Lord and pray That she will be drawn closer to You and closer to her husband in Jesus name I pray. Lord I just pray for all the ladies on this page that have requests you see each and every one of them and Lord I just pray that you would reach out to them & minister to them where ever they live whether it is in the US, Canada, Australia, China, UK etc, etc We just ask this in your Holy Name In Faith Believing Amen!!

  • Cindy says:

Two days in a row — I think this must be a message that I am really supposed to GET. This and the words to a song that include, “I will seek you in the morning…” which is and has been stuck in my head for the last several days to the point that when I wake up it is what I am thinking. I guess God has His own way of shouting!!

  • Marilyn says:

I, too, share the heartfelt desire to make time with the Lord a priority in the morning — to read His Word faithfully, and ponder His teaching. Discipline is my greatest challenge. Being a morning person, my brain is clearer and I recall more at that time of day. I often find myself reading the morning newspaper, before going off to work, ready to discuss current news-making events or topics with my co-workers. I try to inject faith-based perspectives whenever possible, hoping to prompt further discussion. But, it would be wiser for me to read the Bible in the morning, leaving the newspaper for later. After all, a breakfast of Truth is more filling than a feast of half-truths!

  • Amy says:

This is hard for me. It is accountablility. My life has been completely turned upside down this year and I have failed the test. I have become a person I am not proud of. Things all came out last night as my husband found some emails I had with someone else. I would not lie about it and we had a deep discussion last night. It is not fair to him. I was and am wrong. There is no two ways about it. Even knowing all this … I still need to pray for a desire to change. That breaks me even more. It (the desire) should be there. Why am I so horrible that it is not? How deeply has Satan and his thieves penetrated me? Ladies, please pray for a big change of heart for me. Please pray I can WANT to change for my marriage and not just do it cause its the right thing to do. There is so much more I could say, but I’ll leave it at this. Please Lord, please Father, please change me.

  • Tracy says:

Guilty as chared. Ok so thats a bit dramatic but yes I have been neglecting the little things hence no comments here from me for ages. Been glancing at mailing and no more My bad as my kids say.
    Thanks forpointing it out

  • DonnaL says:

Someone once said to me “How can you spiritually feed others if you aren’t feeding on God’s word yourself?” So true….I’m not very effective for Christ when I don’t spend time with Him. I’m not very effective when I don’t read, meditate, pray and keep focused on Him. I even have the tools to do these things and in fact have more resources than many other believers. I have a bible (in fact more than one) but many of our Christian brothers and sisters in the world share a bible with someone else. Some don’t even have a bible.

Heavenly Father, I am sorry that I neglect spending time with you. Lord, stir something in me to desire nothing more than you…draw me to yourself Lord, give me a great hunger for your word. So much so Lord that it is the first thing on my mind each day. Help me to know you more Lord. In His Holy Name, Amen.

  • Linda J says:

Gail thank you for the wonderful devotional. Yes, Father, help me to make reading Bible a priority in my life! I agree with Judy and Linda R that I should start every morning by reading His word and praying. Otherwise the whole day will be a mess. Chinese New Year — Spring Festival is coming, every one is busy shopping, me too. It makes me very tired and have no energy to read. First things first. I’ll try to make my life easier.

  • Linda R says:

Well I think Judy just gave me the Idea of What I Need to start doing and that is to Read My Bible & Pray before I open up the Daily Devotional here as sometimes when I open this first I can get so caught up in it that I end up feeling rushed reading my Bible & Praying or just skip reading my Bible altogether which isn’t good. One thing that Does Help me is I have Copied & Pasted All the Books & Chapters of the Bible in my computer so I can just click on any book example Luke and any chapter example 3 and it just opens up Luke chapter 3 for me to read, you can adjust the size of the print and the Bible is the NIV Version so it is really handy and so help make you be more accountable.
Lord I just pray that You would help each one of use as we try to be more committed each day to have our Special Time With You In Reading Your Word & In Prayer. You know how easy it is for other things to get in the way but I pray Lord that you will help us to be mindful to always put You First & Foremost in every area of our lives. Jesus I just bring each Lady here today who as asked for pray that You would reach out and Minister to them, meet their needs and help them to feel your presence in their lives, Heal those who need healing, give wisdom to those who need wisdom, direction & decisions to make, In Jesus Name I Pray, Amen!!!

I HAVE BEEN USING A CPAP MACHINE FOR MORE THEN 7 YEARS NOW. I HAVE SLEEP APNEA AS WELL. I FOUND THAT IT TOOK ME A GOOD 6-10 MONTHS TO GET USE TO THE NOSE GEAR AND NOT FEELING LIKE I WAS SUFFICATING. BUT I THANK GOD NOW FOR THIS MACHINE IT IS A LIFE SAVER. I NOW DON’T SLEEP DUE TO PRESSURE BUILD UP AND CHRONIC PAIN. SO WHAT SLEEP I DO GET I THANK GOD AND MY CPAP MACHINE FOR. THE NOISE THAT COMES WITH THE MACHINE, YOU AND THOSE AROUND YOU WHO SLEEP IN THE SAME ROOM WILL GET USE TO IT. NOW IT’S JUST APART OF THE NOISE WITHIN THE ROOM FOR ME. I CAN EVEN TELL WHEN IT NEEDS WATER ADDED TO IT.
FOR ME IT’S A LIFE SAVER

  • Judy D says:

The big thing I can change, I think I already did it. I need to do my quiet time with the Lord first, reading and praying, before I respond to the online devotional. I found it was “eating up” my time when I went to the blog first. As wonderful as it is, I needed to have my quiet time, reading the bible and praying, with the Lord before I headed to the devotional blog site. After making this decision this haven worked out much better. When I am home by myself, I am able to be more punctual with my bible reading and prayer time. It’s the weekends that get me! Sometimes I find myself doing my reading in bed at night before the lights go out. But I have heard that your mind will ponder things you last put in before you go to sleep, so I guess that isn’t all bad. I know I always feel better when I have my time with the Lord in the morning before the day gets away from me.

  • Dianne says:

I desperately need help in getting my sleep schedule in control. I have again fallen into waking up between 10am and 12noon, and this cuts into my quiet time in a big way.

I use multiple alarm clocks and have two people calling me in the mornings. Still, I sleep.

I had a sleep study on Dec 27, and they found I have sleep apnea. I have two options: loose weight (diet and exercise) and/or get a CPAP. I’m doing poorly at the losing weight part, and my husband seriously doubts that I can tolerate a CPAP (including the small, new kind).

He has good reason to doubt. I find things on and around my face annoying/distracting (even my own hair). I also have a hard time falling asleep when there is noise going on (including noise from running a fan—which a lot have people have told me helps them sleep).

A CPAP machine makes noise, and either has a mask for the face, or prongs to place in the nose.

This house is quiet this time of the year, which is good.

Neither my landlord/friend nor my husband are very tolerant of my need for quiet time (in the book Captivating [the women's equivalent of Wild at Heart], it says this kind of quiet time WILL be opposed.

Plus, I get frustrated/feel pressured when I wake up under the gun with my responsibilities. So, my quiet time gets cut short.

Lately, I have been finding that I haven’t even said my morning prayers until sometime in late afternoon–and those are just the routine prayers, not the heartfelt ones, and certainly not quiet time.

My schedule involves being out of the house every night until 10 pm or later. Since this landlord/friend requires that at least the kitchen is in order at all times, there are often chores that have to be done before I can go to bed.

Then, since there is no TV reception downstairs (there is no cable or satellite here), my husband set up our TV in our bedroom (upstairs), and watches the news, and sometimes Nightline, so the earliest the house gets quiet is 11:30 or midnight on most nights. Now, I have to admit that I do like to catch the news every day, if I can, but I don’t have the chance to catch it at any other time than before bed.

I have sometimes done my Bible reading after midnight, but I prefer to read things that I don’t have to think about so that I don’t work my mind and end up not being able to fall asleep for good while after I finish.

“I think that I need to do more than just make a decision. I need to make a commitment —” Thank you, Cindy; this jumped out at me.

Bella, “I am going to read my bible everyday in the morning especially, because I have the time and am not busy at all, just plain lazy,” I find that my mind is always lazy for an hour to 3 hours when I first get up. I like to take advantage of this time for quiet time, because my own thoughts are much less likely to jump in and get in the way of hearing God speak to me (through the Bible, or journalling, or just meditating). In the morning I can read the Bible more like reading a book than studying, and God/the Spirit still makes things I need to see/hear jump out at me.

Then I just write down what jumped out, and write about it, and/or pray about it, and try to remain open during the rest of the day to seeing where that “message” fits in through the course of the day. If I share what God gave me with someone else that day, the lesson usually helps the other person(s) as well as is made more solid in me, too.

Pat, I am prone to doing what you described, too.

    Sharonb.–prayed for ya :-} .

  • cheryl m says:

When I opened my email I did not see the devotion for today. It felt odd. I looked farther and found it. Thank God for fast forward and fast backspace….. and that seems to be how my life has been going. I sometimes fast forward instead of thinking about the little things that may make or break my day with God. I am now going to be retired and have much time on my hands. It’s not that I don’t have things to do, it’s just that I don’t do the things I should. My goal is to set up a schedule to devote to God, clean my house, exercise, eat right, do something I want to do, to balance the time during the day and be thankful for all I have. Your prayers will be appreciated in helping me to seek God’s wisdom with this decision and to obey those guidelines.

    God Bless you all. cheryl

  • sandy says:

I AGREE WITH EVERYONE, IT IS VERY EASY TO JUST LET THE DAY GO BY WITHOUT VISITING THE LORD. I ALWAYS WAIT FOR JUST THE RIGHT TIME DURING THE DAY TO SIT DOWN AND READ AND PRAY THE ONLY THING IS THAT THE RIGHT TIME USUALLY DOESNT COME AND I FIND MYSELF RUSHING THROUGH MY PRAYER AND TIME WITH THE LORD RIGHT BEFOR I GO TO SLEEP, THATS NOT GOOD
I OWE HIM SO SO MUCH AND I CANT AFFORD TO BE AWAY FROM HIM.

  • anne says:

how true. it is so easy for me to get busy and leave things unattended to – and the first thing that gets let go, sadly enough, is my quiet time with God. if i could just remember to “seek him first” everyday all those other things would be taken care of just like he promises.

  • Patti49 says:

I think for me, I have to be more diciplined and plan it in my day, preferable first thing in the morning. So much time is wasted and many times it takes something drastic to turn my attention toward God and draw me to my knees.

Dear Michlle…we all will be praying for you…that you will continue to seek His face and take the steps toward His open arms…and find Him, He Who will give you exactly what you need, dear one.

Lord Jesus, we all are so human and so easily caught up in the business and weariness of our days. We come to you asking for the desire to seek You above all things…that our hearts be drawn to You, Lord. May we all seek Your face with heartfelt sincerity…and may we all find You with open arms.

Thank you for your faithfulness, Lord, for these ladies here, the writers, those of us that come here to share and most of all for Your saving grace.

Lord, give us peace in the midst of chaos and fill us with Your Holy presence as we take our own individual journeys.

    In Jesus name, we pray…believing

What a wonderful day… I feel God talking to me thru your advice.
I use to worship and study every morning and I felt so postive about my life, until I started to neglect it. I skipped one day I had so I thought a good excuse then the next day got eaiser to find another excuse and so on. It has been several months since I worship and study. At first it was ok then all of what you mentioned started to happen. My spiritual life was soon in a mess. I made freinds in the world, and thought I was doing good. The danger is that I was close to hitting bottom (the pull of the flesh) I was hit with spiritual trials that could of been devestating for me and others around me. The Lord quickly rescued me,and dilivered me from falling. Everyone who is reading this, PLEASE don’t start your day without visiting with the Lord. The enemy is waiting for you to fall asleep take a little brake or simply forget. He’s got but a little time.

BE ALERT PRAY MEDITATE AND PRAISE GOD DAILY. CONFESS YOUR SIN AND RENEW YOUR COMMITMENT DAILY. MAY YOUR LIFES BE BLESSED WITH THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT…..

WOW!! I feel like this is God knocking on the door to my heart “again”!! I’ve let some things go lately, and I need to get back into His word and do what He wants me to do instead of what I want to do!! Thanks soooo much for this great devotion!! God bless you all!!

  • Pat says:

Thank you for this great reminder. When I lack self confidence, second guess everything I do, and allow depression to slip in it is because my daily devotions have not become daily not even weekly. It is good to know that God knows our human nature and forgives us and allows us to start new with no blemish!! Praise God. His mercies are new everyday! Now that is something to give thanks for.

  • Glenda Beverage says:

I have neglected my prayer life as well as my bible study, thank you for reminding me how important my spiritual growth is to my over all health.

  • June L says:

Sharon, Praying for you. The great Physician has you in His hand. Believe we will soon be singing praises that all is well!!

  • Cindy says:

This basic message has been coming up a lot over the past week or so. Before reading this I had already decided, again, that I needed to take time EVERY morning to read my Bible and pray. I think that I need to do more than just make a decision. I need to make a commitment — write it down and post it on the refrigerator and/or anywhere else I will see it during the day.

Thank you for such a great reminder. I am very guilty of neglecting the little things and wondering why there seems to be nothing but chaos and more chaos in my life for a while now. I am going to read my bible everyday in the morning especially, because I have the time and am not busy at all, just plain lazy. Thank you for your great message.

  • CHRIS says:

THANK YOU GAIL FOR THIS DEVOTIONAL. FOR REMINDING US THAT WE DO SOMETIMES “NEGLECT THE LITTLE THINGS.” I AM GUILTY OF DOING JUST THAT AT TIMES WHEN I SOMETIMES FORGET TO DO MY DEVOTIONAL READINGS IN THE MORNING BEFORE I GET BUSY WITH MY DAY. TODAY WOULD BE ONE OF THOSE DAYS. AS IT IS MY PAYDAY, I WOULD NOT OF DONE MY READINGS BEFORE GOING OUT TO THE BANK AND GETTING STARTED WITH MY DAY. NOW I WILL BE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO THEM BEFORE GOING OUT.
