Promises from God

Do you ever feel like God’s promises don’t apply to you? Tell us why or why not.
http://christianwomentoday.com/chat/askus.html

Have you ever questioned if God’s promises were for you? Maybe you feel like you don’t fit the criteria or for some reason they don’t apply to you.

Be encouraged.

When Jesus said, “God so loved the world,” He was talking about you. Jesus goes on to say that whoever believes in Him – that means anyone and everyone who believes, including you – will not perish.

Indeed God’s love and salvation is offered to everyone:

  • “[God] is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
  • “[God our Savior] wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4)
  • “[Christ Jesus] gave Himself as a ransom for all men” (1 Timothy 2:6)

Therefore when Jesus made a promise, it was for you.

As well, when New Testament writers quoted Old Testament promises, they demonstrated that those promises also had universal application.

Peter states God’s most basic and universal promise in Acts chapter two. “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38, 39)

This is the promise to which we cling: if we repent of our sins and believe in Jesus, then our sins will be forgiven and we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

~Thank you, God for Your great and precious promise to forgive us and give us the Holy Spirit. Thank you for Your love.

    Anila,

It is amazing how God provides people such as you and Patti to minister to me. Thank you so much for your concern and sharing your experiences. I know this too shall pass but at times it can feel like an eternity. I have learned to take one day at a time and lean on God for my needs. Are you taking anything for your depression? I was taking Wellbutrin but now switched to Effexor which works much better for me. You are correct when you say you come out of it much stronger and better for it. God sometimes needs to show us how we need him and we need to depend on him always.

I am saying a prayer that your depression will be short lived as well.

    dear debra,
I came to this site because i myself am going through a depression (rightly as you say ‘chemical imbalance’). But when i read thru so much of the devotionals and the needs of others, i feel, my problem is so less. Praise the Lord.

Debra dear, this is for you — many times in my life i have experienced chemical imbalances of deep intensity (some felt i was off my mind, though I could feel and understand everything going around me very clearly). Sometimes it took months to clear off and get back to normalcy. [honestly, this is the one thing that scares me too much ... because i feel helpless and feel 'Lord, surely u can take this off me']. Some days i cry and cry (reasons may be stupid, but mostly because i feel just awful inside me. There is a lot of chemical imbalance then). But as each time, Thank God, each time I came out of it — TO BE A BETTER PERSON. Better in the sense — that i become so aware of the negatives and wrongs in me and seek HIS forgiveness and guidance. Each day becoming better. (of course, we humans tend to go back to our old ways when all around we are perfectly ok — God forgive us). Yet, what i wish to say is… dont bother about whether you will/will not got through your imbalances… just keep repeating in your mind when you feel the imbalance helplessness that ‘HE KNOWS HIS JOB AND I AM GOING AHEAD WITH THIS IMBALANCE’. It is very hard i know because I have been there (thank God I went thru it many times… its because I have been there myself, that i know what you or other feel during that time). Keep going. You are in my prayers.
    Luv,
    Anila

Debra we live in Duncan, 75 miles south of Oklahoma City. That is exciting! If you would like to write, my address is pstew49@hotmail.com. Our daughter and husband are adopting from Ehtiopia, and hope to have her in a year.

It is so wonderful to think that we might make a difference in a little one’s life….yet such a responsibility.

  • Debra says:

    Patti,

We have been looking at adopting a Westie from the OK Westie Rescue in Oklahoma City. Are you near OK City? To adopt we would have to go there to pick it up. Don’t know when we will do this now with the upcoming surgery.

  • Debra says:

    Mary,

I said a prayer for you and Rob that God would bring you closer this month and restore your love for each other. I am believing with you that God is in control of your lives and wants the best for you. Know that there are others that care for you.

    Blessings will come your way.

    Sharon B,

Thank you for your response. I believe I will be fine. It is just something I was not expecting since my Mom never had any problems.

Each day is a blessing from God. Thanks again.

  • Debra says:

    Patti,

Thank you so much for your reply. I know that God is faithful and will never leave me even in our darkest hour. It is wonderful just knowing that.

I have not heard that song but it sounds beautiful. I would love to hear it.

I am also so thankful I have a wonderful supportive husband who will be by my side through this all.

Thank you so much for your prayers. I need them. I am in Texas. Are you in the US?

Ladies, it is so good to be thin again, and even my doctor says I don’t need to lose anymore. I weighed around 160 for years and now weigh 130. Prayed many years for God to help me…so PRAISE HIM!!!!!

  • June L says:

Chris, I have battled a weight problem since I married 38 years ago. Recently I started eating healthy and have lost 30 pounds, and so far keeping it off. My motivation was seeing my husband hooked up to tubes, wires, and machines after triple bypass surgery in June. I decided I didn’t want to go there. Only wish I had done this 30 years ago. But, it is never too late. My husband was a heavy smoker and still smokes some. Try eating a piece of fruit 30 minutes to an hour before your meals. It curbs your appitite and you wuill eat less. I will try to email you some more things that have helped me later on your persoanl email if you are interested.

Pattiu, I agree with Sharon. Your words of wisdom are aprreciated here!!

    Debra,

I am gald you are getting a second opinion. I was 34 and of course, I am not one to advise. I do know that at that age, I had a difficult time finding the right adjustment.

I would just encourage you to really pray about it also….that the Lord will lead you to the right doctor, one who has wisdom about this type of thing and will help you decide what is best for you!

Debra, God never leaves us….He never abandons us. So many times in my life, I have turned by back to Him and done things my own way. Each and every time, He has been faithful and waited patiently and lovingly until I lifted my eyes, once again to Him.

I’ve been rebellious and stubborn, but praise God, that He is faithful to me and His love is not stubborn.

In those dark times, just remember He is there..right beside you. I pray that in those times, you will feel His loving arms around you. I often think of the words to a song….”If I could just sit with you a while….if You can just hold me”

God bless you and I will be praying for you.

    Patti,

I am 48. I believe the best choice for me is a total hysterectomy but I want to understand the hormone issue more before I have it. I am getting a second opinion from my GP this Friday.

I read your message and it sounds so familiar. It is so true that God is always there with us even when we don’t feel his presence. Just knowing this is such a comfort. That’s why I love the Footprints in the Sand poem because it says it all as it is in those times that he is carrying us.

Bless you for touching my heart today and thanks for caring.

Hi Minnie! Just wondering if ‘God’s Promises For You’, written by Max Lucado, copyright 2006, might be helpful to you. If you have never read anything by him, he is very readable, with a gift for encouragement. If you attend a church, perhaps they have a library, where you might find helpful resources. http://www.cbd.com is a Christian book distributor on the East coast, which has thousands of titles through which you can browse, see excerpts, even speak to a customer service representative for ideas and/or recommendations. This is a wonderful company, and their products are discounted, many significantly. I hope these ideas will help you in your journey with God, and that His promises become ever clearer to you and realized! God bless you, Minnie!

  • Minnie says:

I’m learning more about God’s promises and reading the bible helps to reveal some of them to me but it can be tough going. I don’t always understand the scriptures in the bible though I try to read it each day.

I want to understand all of God’s promises, not as a catalogue of things I can call on God to provide during a crisis, but rather to better understand Him and His will for us every day. I want to be able to recognise the promises from Him that He has given us. Does anyone know how I can learn about them all aside from continuing to read the bible?

  • Marilyn says:

Amen, Suzanne! When we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we have all that we need to overcome our struggles and challenges! This does not necessarily mean that God will fulfill our every hope and dream, but that He will transform our attitudes and perspectives on our circumstances, empowering us to rise above them and live victoriously in the midst of our trials! This is what brings true joy and peace to our lives! Praising God during our trials, despite our trials, is the key. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were always grumbling about something, never quite satisfied with God’s provision. Well, we all know how disappointed God was with their focus on the negative. Now, fast-forward to the New Testament, where Paul and Silas are in prison . . . things didn’t look too promising for them, but they chose to praise God with thankful hearts, and in the next scene, after a violent earthquake broke their chains and the prison door flung open, they are set free! I love this story! (Acts 16:16-40) Many of us have our own private prisons, where we are held captive by our negative outlook on life and on God’s provision for us. We even blame God for not rescuing us from the consequences of our choices. But, God loves us so much, that He does something for us that is better and far-reaching . . . He doesn’t necessarily change our circumstances, but He changes our attitudes about them. Once our attitudes are rehabilitated, our circumstances no longer hinder our peace and joy. He is so good!! :)

  • Suzanne B says:

Mary asked a good question about which promises we should apply to ourselves.

We know that God hasn’t promised us a life without trouble, as many of you have shared your struggles. In fact Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Besides the promise of salvation to all who believe (John 3:16, Romans 1:16), He promises us the Holy Spirit.

    Listen to these amazing verses:
“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Have believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13, 14)

I believe this is a promise we need to remind ourselves of daily. I have been included in Christ, marked with a seal, given a deposit, guaranteed an inheritance – WOW!

Best of all, I will never be alone. Almighty God is with me every step of the way. “And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

  • Patti49 says:

Throughout my Christian life and walk, I have, many times, felt I had sinned to the extent that I lost God…that He had abandoned me. Always, He was right there..waiting for me to fall on my knees and come back to Him.

There have also been times that my heart was in such anguish that I couldn’t pray, I couldn’t think of God and I was angry as well. Again, He was always right beside me with open arms…waiting for me to look to Him.

There have been times that I was so grieved and hurt that I was numb and couldn’t/didn’t function in general everyday things. It was in those times, He took me under His wing. I have hidden in the cleft of the rock many times…until I felt strong enough to come out.

His love is everlasting. His love is unconditional. He is faithful when we are not. He never never leaves us…even tho we feel isolated and alone….He is there even then. He is faithful when we are not. His grace is sufficient and His mercy is endless.

We can never move so far away from him or go so deep in sin, that He is there…waiting for us to come home to Him. I know these things because I have traveled these paths.

Lord Jesus, How I praise you! Your love and mercy is beyond our comprehension. Your grace is beyond what I deserve. You are faithful when I am not and You never ever leave us. Lord, I love you and worship You…for you are my Lord, my Savior..my All and All.

In Jesus Name….I bow down in praise and prayer..

  • Barbara C says:

    Hi Ladies,

For many years of my life I have suffered with a debilitating disorder that has had me on disability for nearly 9 years now. Through this long battle i have gotten to know the Lord in ways that only such suffering could had produced. I still am not over this disorder but I am on my way in improving my ways of living each and every day.

God has kept me alive for a good purpose for i should had been dead at least 7 times now. However, such is not the case and I am certain that goodness shall prevail through all of this negative stuff in my life as i turn to the Lord and ask for Thy Holy Spirit to help me in understanding how to be set free from such agony.

The one thing that i do know is that if i have a negative attitude in regards to things that are taking place in my life then it just holds up GOD’s goodworks of setting me free. When i choose to have a better attiude in regards to my suffering and afflictions then and only then does God truly work in my life.

Everyone has their own trials and tribulations through this journey here on earth called life and if we can get on through it the best that we can while always remembering that it is only temporary and that once we make it into heaven all will have been well worth it. Those whom do not know who God is and what his son Jesus Christ has done for us are the ones whom will live in pure hell and pain and suffering when all is said and done.

We all need to jsut do or best each and everyday before HE decides to take us home.

    Barbara

  • Paulette says:

I too am no stranger to afflictions – and I always cling to that one scripture verse which gives an awesome promise” “For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future…” Jeremiah 29:11.
So many times have I clung to this – we will go through some real trials in this life, and I have had my share, with living with MS and getting out of an emotionally abusive relationship with a family member. As I look back, it was never fun enduring the pain (be it emotional or physical)- but the blessings that pour out when we live victoriously is overwhelming – when we fix our eyes on Christ alone – when we keep our eyes and minds heaven-bound and not earth-bound, always striving to see the bigger picture that God sees.
God has been my strong tower, my Protector … where would I be now if not for Him? … too scary to think about actually, so instead I choose to rest in Him and let Him rejoice over me, and let Him sing over me. (Zephaniah 3:17)

  • Patti49 says:

    Debra,

    How old are you?

  • Debra says:

Yes, it is a good devotional reminding me that although you may not always feel saved God promises if you believe in His Son you are. Please pray for me as I have to decide on having a total hysterectomy vs. a partial due to a benign large ovarian cyst. The doc recommends a total due to an abnormal pap for which biopsies came back negative but I am concerned about the hormone imbalance issue as I have experienced depression which is a chemical imbalance and don’t want to add to this. Thank you for your prayers.
