Best Romantic Movies
Written by sounddezine
It’s that time of year again when romance is in the air, whether you have someone to be your valentine or not. Valentine’s day cards, chocolates in heart shapes boxes, heart shaped candies and balloons, red roses and the like abound. Whether you’re planning a romantic evening with your loved one or wishing this day would just be over, watching a great romantic movie is never amiss. Here is a list of just a few of my favorites…purely subjective of course, so feel free to add yours.
When Harry Met Sally – One of the best romantic comedies ever made, this film sparked the debate over whether men and women can be just friends. Witty dialogue and likeable characters played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan makes this one of my all time favorites.
The Sound of Music
– This musical always tops my list, in just about any category. This classic story of a seemingly impossible love between a nun-to-be and a naval commander is set in the beautiful hills of Salzburg, Austria during the turbulent times of the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. Based on a true story, the exceedingly singable music is an added bonus and guaranteed to keep you humming along.
Titanic – Leonardo DiCaprio and his declaration of “I’m the king of the world!” is one of the most unforgettable movie lines ever. Just as unforgettable is the haunting Academy Award winning song “My Heart Will Go On” sung by Celine Dion. A huge blockbuster movie directed by James Cameron (
The Terminator, Aliens), this 3¼ hour long movie will alternately keep you on the edge of your seat and in tears.
The Notebook – Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, this film has to be one of the most touching romantic dramas in recent years. A young couple falls in love, only to be separated by her upper class parents who are opposed to their daughter dating a working class boy. Seven years later their paths cross once again, and…well…I won’t spoil the ending for you, but there is an interesting twist. The careers of lead actors Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling skyrocketed as a result of this movie, and they ended up becoming a real life couple as well. Very sweet.
Whether you’re curling up with a loved one, or just in your favorite PJs, a romantic movie makes a perfect Valentine. What is your must-see romantic movie?

highly recomend a walk to remember! a good classic romantic one to watch!
I agree with a recommendation of The Lake House and i also think Moonstruck (with Cher and Nicholas Cage) and Somewhere in Time (Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour) are wonderful romantic movies.
If you like classic romances, i suggest The Best Years of Our Lives and A Letter to Three Wives
Best all time: The Princess Bride
Best recent: Music and Lyrics
My husband even agrees with both of these…and for romantic movies, we usually don’t agree!
Also gotta love Sweet Home Alabama, but for all-over feel good, I can’t list it, because Patrick Dempsey gets his heart broken.
The best romantic movie ever is Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. It’s a story of eternal love. The ending is so beautiful and the musical score adds so much more to it.
Oh, I love “The Notebook”. I watched it twiced and cried! Other favorites are “Someone To Watch Over Me”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Titanic” and “The Lake House”. Get any one of these on a rainy day, cuddle up with a blanket and cup of tea, and enjoy!
I loved “Pride & Prejudice” with Colin Firth, and an absolute must for me is “Emma” with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Woah, two Claires on here, unusual.
I thought Love Actually had a good story to it. It’s a British film and there are a few scenes that are going to be ‘too much information’ for North American viewers. I wish they hadn’t filmed it that way, the story could have been told without it. But that’s what fast forward buttons are for. (It does have a great sound track.)
For straight-up romantic stories, I loved You’ve Got Mail, an unexpectedly good remake of a classic.
If any of you enjoy films with subtitles I highly recommend Amelie and A Very Long Engagement. Both french films starting Audrey Tautou but with different feels. Even my husband liked the second one.
Can’t say that I have seen it Renee….but will have to keep my eyes open to see if I can rent it.
Hey Deebee have you seen “Barefoot in the Park” with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. That’s a good lovestory too!
The best romance movie ever is definitely “The Notebook.” I still cry ever time I watch it.
I highly recommend “Love, Actually” – my all time favorite. Although, it is more of a Christmas movie, it leaves you with such a wonderful hopeful feeling. A warning though, there is a few “nudity scenes,” but it’s done with taste- you just have to stick with the movie to understand. Enjoy!
Favorite Romantic Movie:
The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel
The lead character loves God but then allows his heart to be filled with revenge due to a great injustice that separates him from his true love. God’s love never leaves us.
A couple of movies come to my mind….The Way We Were with Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford is a real oldie goldie! But a good one. One of the newer ones that I love to watch over and over again is Sweet Home Alabama.
Out of Africa is a love story which involves more than just 2 people.
Meryl Streep ( a favortie) and Robert Redford are the primary characters but the land and the native people are breathtaking as well
One of my favorites of all time
“The Princess Bride” is a classic, and also a movie that both sexes can enjoy … inconceivable!!
(Also, +1 for Office Space.)
Obviously, I’d have to go with Slapshot or Terminator 2 but Office Space is pretty good too.
