Amanda Rouse was not supposed to be on the school bus, but might have averted a tragedy Wednesday when she managed to stop the vehicle after the driver fell out of her seat.
Rouse, a 15-year-old Marina High School student, was sitting behind the driver’s seat and pulled the emergency brake when driver Christine L. Graves fell as she made the turn from Contra Costa Street onto Sonoma Avenue in Seaside about 8 a.m.
Her grandmother, Sally Correll, said she was proud Rouse took quick and decisive action — but knows she made the wrong choice because she didn’t call in sick to school. … Rouse must attend Saturday school as punishment. [Source: Monterey Herald]
Apparently Ms Rouse decided to stay on the bus rather than calling in sick "she asked [the driver] if she could stay on the bus for a ride back to the bus yard". For that she will receive detention, even though she ended up potentially saving injury to her classmates and damage to the bus.
Questions: Is it fair to give her detention? Does a person’s "good deeds" cancel out their "bad deeds"?

I believe that she should face the consequences that her deliberate actions dictate. I am very glad she was there, however, do we choose to tell our kids that it’s ok to lie or hide. There is also the possibility that nothing would have happened this day and she would just be skipping school. I don’t think we let our kids off the hook because an extraordinary circumstance took place. I know, we probably have to look at each case individually. In this case, I believe the young lady should be given a detention for not calling in sick and should also be recognized for her heroic actions and she should be aware that she deserves both.
I believe Ms Rouse was the angel sent from above to help avoid the disaster. At times God puts us at places for a purpose and that was Ms Rouse’ purpose for being there. As for detention, I dont think it should even be considered.
One could say there is a very fine line in this argument … but I don’t see it that way. Ms Rouse had the wherewithal to acknowledge in her mind there was a disaster pending, the driver was helpless and she had the ability to stand up, grab the emergency brake and PULL. This was a quick but conscientious choice made by a young smart gal. Everyone was more than grateful and hyped after the incident … so I can see how she would want to stay with the driver …. but she still had the responsibility to continue on to school. I believe ‘responsibility’ is a part of our lives that should be instilled in all people starting at a very young age. It would make ‘fine’ lines in life not so fine after all ….
