Charlton Heston, the actor who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the chariot-racing hero Ben-Hur and who campaigned for the American civil rights movement, only later to infuriate Hollywood liberals with his leadership of the National Rifle Association, has died aged 83.
A statement from his family said: “Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiselled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession and to his country.” (Source: Times Online)
Charlton Heston is famous for his many movie roles, which include the original Planet of the Apes as well as leading roles in biblical films The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur (for which he won an Oscar).
In his later years Heston became well known as president of the National Rifle Association. He was president until 2003, when he announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and stepped down. A private memorial service for Heston will be held this month.
