this season i started out rooting for other contestants, both of whom are now castoffs. but i find myself starting to cheer for david cook, even though i originally thought he was too ‘smug’ to be likable for the general public. so perhaps there really is something about visible self-confidence that makes people want to vote for you?!

what i also find interesting about AI the past few weeks is how often Jesus’ name is being mentioned in the songs. an intentional marketing move for even more viewers, or pure coincidence?

I would agree with you Pegster! David Cook may not make it to the end, but he really doesn’t need to at this point because he has already made a name for himself and is a great performer. Will be interesting to see how he does next week!

This was nicely done! I find David Cook’s performances to be compelling, not because of his “interesting arrangements” but because of the heart and energy he puts into each song (which the arrangement facilitates). I think he does the best job of all the contestants of breaking down the wall between the performer and the song while retaining that slightly smug detachment that is so essential to a quality rock performance (but doesn’t work with a power ballad). He hasn’t been caught flat-footed yet, even on Dolly week. I think it is interesting to check out the studio versions of each song against the live version performed for the audience. You will understand why Dawg said David Cook is most ready to record an album. Poor Mr. Cook is now being slammed because he has a digital album he recorded in his living room 2 years ago and released by himself that is now at the top of the digital charts thanks to fans that couldn’t wait for the new stuff so they went out and bought the old stuff (not against the rules but some folks are miffed by his success). He may not make it to the end, but he really doesn’t need to at this point.

While I totally agree that American Idol is a singing contest, I think the viewers are starting to expect more of the contestants. Charisma, performance, and now musicianship are huge factors in how far a contestant gets. Certainly the move to officially allow contestants to play instruments is a step in that direction (even though Taylor Hicks started it with his harmonica, and Blake Lewis last season arguably used an instrument as the human beatbox). As talented as David Cook is, I don’t find him any more so than the other contestants just because he’s better at finding interesting arrangements to copy. It’ll be interesting to see how he holds up the rest of the season.

Interesting thoughts!! Thanks for making me think as I watch American Idol tonight! I have been wondering about David Cook’s arrangements myself and this has cleared up some of the confusion!
