A worry a day …

Written by erin

When was the last time you worried about something? Maybe it was a minute ago, when your daughter didn’t call when she said she would. Maybe it was this morning when you thought about what your colleagues would think of your presentation at a morning meeting. Or it could have been when a boyfriend said something to make you upset and you wondered if you actually would be together forever.

We all worry. It’s so much a part of our lives that we rarely notice how much we do it. But what does worrying fulfill in us that not worrying won’t?

A recent article in the Edmonton Journal profiled the life of a woman who deals with anxiety. The article stated that anxiety has become the most prevalent health problem in the world. Anxiety is a little more than a little worry, in fact, it’s a lot of worry. Patricia Pearson, a woman who battles with anxiety, stated a few of her thoughts on the subject.

This anxiety is driven, Pearson believes, by our lack of a sense of place in the world. "To have a sense of place is to have some sense of what your purpose is, what your options are," she said in an interview in Montreal in a stop on her book tour. And many of us don’t have that.

Why do we worry so much? Is it healthy to worry a little? How do we make ourselves worry less? Is Pearson right about anxiety being caused by a lack of purpose?

Worry is an avenue that the enemy uses to distance us from Jesus. I find that when I get caught up in a cycle of worry that if I look at my walk with the Lord, it is sorely lacking. If only I’d do this right away. But the fact that I do it eventually is victory over the enemy and his weapon of worry. Jesus is our deliverer.
