Internet Addiction Disorder

Written by Darren Hewer

Keyboard: Help!Internet Addiction Disorder is being considered for inclusion in the DSM-V. The DSM (“Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”) is the standard text used by psychiatrists in North America to diagnose psychological disorders.

Is Internet Addiction really a psychological disorder? University student Aaron Sheldon argues that it is:

Experts debate the existence of Internet Addictive Disorder, but … Internet addiction is just as real as your face, and the danger it poses to this and coming generations is underestimated.

At this point, I have already passed through a phase of Internet-defined existence, during which I didn’t feel like I was doing anything wrong. However … I have skipped a ton of classes and assignments either to play a game, or to catch up on sleep I lost while playing the night before. … I have seen people’s relationships and friendships shatter, as well their grades and goals, at the beckoning call of MySpace’s trendy lure.

While tragic, I’m not sure that this proves that Internet Addition is a real disorder. How much time do you spend on the Internet per day? Do you think Internet Addiction is an actual psychological disorder?

  • Internet addiction disorder refers to the problematic use of the Internet, including the various aspects of its technology, such as electronic mail (e-mail) and the World Wide Web. The reader should note that Internet addiction disorder is not listed in the mental health professional’s handbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (2000), which is also called the DSM. Internet addiction has, however, been formally recognized as a disorder by the American Psychological Association.

They suffer four symptoms: They forget to eat and sleep; they need more advanced technology or more hours on-line as they develop ‘resistance’ to the pleasure given by their current system; if they are deprived of their computer, they experience genuine withdrawal symptoms; And in common with other addictions, the victims also begin to have more arguments, to suffer fatigue, to get lower marks in tests and to feel isolated from society.

Addicted, okay, especially to writing online. Glad to say that I am living my life just fine though.

Then again, the quality of life is determined by how one independently manage his or her own choices. Quite sure psychology is also a science, a method, that helps people in doing so.
