Just when I thought I’d heard everything, news out of Naples, Italy proves me wrong. There’s the Miss World pageant, the Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International Pageants, but did you ever think you’d see the day when there would be a Miss Sister Pageant? Well, Rev. Antonio Rungi wants to see that day.
The Italian priest is organizing an online nun pageant to try to change the view of nuns as morose and less than attractive. Come September, visitors to his blog can vote for the most modelesque nun and in the end, crown a winner.
“Being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn’t hide it,” said Rungi.
Yet, predictably, the association of Catholic teachers is giving Rungi flack over his pageant hopes.

“It’s an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God,” the group’s president, Alberto Giannino, told Italy’s ANSA news agency Sunday. [Source: Yahoo News Canada]
With nuns typically portrayed as antique-like and stuffy, I wonder if head shots slapped on a blog and subjected to votes could really help turn the rudder on that view. Rungi claims the idea originated from nuns themselves, so you’d like to think he has honest ambitions.
What do you think of the Miss Sister 2008 Pageant? Do you think it would start to change societies typical views of a nun or is this pageant idea only going to fuel late night stand up routines?
