Crackberry

For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever” (1 Peter 1:24-25).

Technology can be a very wonderful thing. Computers, cell phones, text messaging and e-mail all help us to work more productively and efficiently. But there is also an addiction, sometimes referred to as “Crackberry,” that allows technology to consume us.

Recently, a tragic train wreck happened in California because the engineer was “texting” on his cell phone and not watching the track in front of him. This week, a young boy was struck down while he was “texting” when he should have been watching the street he was crossing.

A recent study of traveling executives showed that a third of them prefer their PDA over their spouse. The study showed that eighty five percent bring their devises into the bedroom. Eighty four percent said they check their e-mails just before going to bed and checking them is the first thing they do when the get out of bed.

These electronic marvels have caused serious relationship problems, especially in marriages, because people are so focused on their PDAs and computers that they are not focusing on what might be going on in their relationships. Experts are now saying “Turn it off, spend some time with your partner and have a real relationship with a living human being.”

What if people had such a tight dependence on their Bible and became equally immersed in the Word of God? Just think what your night and day would be if words of Scripture were the last thing you read at night and the first thing you read in the morning?

Many believers say they want to serve God and obey his word, but how many are reading the Bible in order to learn how?

In 1839 Alexander Campbell wrote, “The Bible is to the intellectual and moral world of man what the sun is to the planets in our system,–the fountain and source of light and life, spiritual and eternal. The Bible contains a full and perfect revelation of God and his will, adapted to man.”

Just imagine how the world would change if people were addicted to their Bibles like they are to their PDAs.

~Lord, help my focus to be on You and give me a fresh hunger for your word. Amen.

Question: What can you do to focus on God’s word this week in a fresh way? Do you need to discipline yourself and your devices of technology?

thank you John for this very eye opening devotional. a little ironic that it took today’s technology to bring this very subject to light. I consider myself from the ‘old school’ way of communicating but(there’s always a but), it wasn’t till last winter that I was drawn to the computer and I didn’t understand why. seems to me that there has always been a computer in the house, as the children got older, the cell phones came and the digital cameras and the I-Pods(I don’t even know what it is let alone identify one in a tech. store). does the old art of pen and paper still exist? as I did say there is a but; i find for myself(now that I have mastered the basics on a computer) that the thrill has worn off. not to say that i don’t realize that this mode of communication is not God’s doing, it is. God created Adam and Eve therefore everything surrounding us is of His doing, His creation. He gave man a mind and a heart and a soul.
i have much gratitude to everyone involved in creating this wonderful site here at TheLife as I have found this fellowship so very comforting in just the short time i have been a member. and I do look forward to the day’s devotional and I do spend time here being inspired and comforted but i also have a disciplined routine that is daily, come rain or shine. and that discipline involves spending even more time with Him, with the passages, the divine Holy Word. when I can use technology such as this format, then it is a ‘bonus’ if you will in that interacting with other Christian sisters brings me to realize that I am not alone. what I have found with being a member here is that I am in fact reading more scripture, i see a scripture being quoted and I find it in the Bible and find myself being swept away by the simplicity and beauty of His voice in my heart. God’s message may be coming across the screen of a cell phone or a computer or what-ever the newest tech device is out there now, but speaking only for myself, the only source that truly has all the answers is within the pages of the Holy Bible. just hold it in your hands and feel the awesomeness come through
