The Sweet Escape of Neiman Marcus?

It first started out as a Christmas card, then a 16-page booklet in 1926, but has now evolved into a thick 155-page book. What is it that everyone flips furiously to when it comes in the mail? The WOW! Gifts: The extravagant and often outrageous offerings that can run into the millions.

Want a Dallas Cowboys 530-square-yard end zone branded on your back lawn? On-court time with the Harlem Globetrotters? How about his and hers life-size Lego sculptures of yourself?

Those are only 3 of the 12 items up for the taking, and that doesn’t include the Karl Lagerfield teddy bear for $1,500.

In these times abuzz with house foreclosures, Wall Street meltdowns and whispers of a recession, is an authentic Guinness home pub or Titanium Fighter motorcycle seems even less necessary than before. Those at the top of the Neiman Marcus company admit that their WOW! Gifts attract peoples imaginations rather than their bank accounts.

“The whole purpose of these fantasy gifts is to make people smile,” said Ginger Reeder, spokeswoman for Neiman Marcus Direct. “I mean they’re fantasies. We’re not saying: ‘You’ve got to rush out and have yourself made in Legos.’ It’s like, wouldn’t that be fun?”

Sometimes bad times are even better for fantasy,” she adds.

Do you agree with Reeder, are fantasies an even sweeter escape when reality is rough? Or is it just needless advertising for out-of-reach luxuries?
