Keep Alert – Living In an Unstable World Part 1

Written by Gail Rodgers

If you are facing a difficult time we would love to pray with you. Are you too busy to spend time with God?

Join us for our Daily Devotional Chat today in our Women’s Chatroom at 10:30am EST.

Many of you write and share your stories of personal worlds that are challenging and even desperate at times. We know many are shaken up by circumstances in your lives and homes. We are all shaken by the unrest in our world.

Even when life is going smoothly and we are in a good space, we often share a sense of instability as we look at life around us.

Throughout the whole book of Hebrews God gives us steps to take that will keep us firm footed during times when our world is shaking. Whether it’s on a personal level or on a larger scale, God knows our situations and our hearts. He offers sound counsel to steady us in an unstable world .

“We must pay more careful attention therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).

1)    Pay attention to what you have already learned about trusting God.

Write out a couple of Bible verses that God has used to touch your heart. Put them by your sink or mirror. Leave them there until you know them by heart. When God speaks to you through a scripture or a devotion, knead it into your heart like flour into bread. It will amaze you how His Word will bring peace and stability to your heart and mind. Keep growing in your faith.

2)    Don’t let your heart drift off.

Guard your heart. Take time to pray. Find a few quiet moments or go for a walk and simply tell God the many things on your heart. Be open and honest. Thank Him for the good things you are enjoying. Tell Him your struggles. Tell Him your heart tends to drift. Ask for His Holy Spirit to fill you with His power. Listen for His Spirit to speak to yours. Yes, pray on the run as you head out the door, but make quiet time to get into His presence too. It is the most refreshing place you will ever find!

3)    Make time to be with others who share your faith.

Find someone or somewhere to share your spiritual journey. We sharpen each other as we encourage one another in our faith. We aren’t meant to go it alone.

Father God,
You know my heart tends to drift from You. So many things distract me and even shake me. Today I ask You to help me to focus on You and what You have been saying to me. Help me to pay careful attention to my walk with You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Questions: What changes would you have to make to your schedule in order to have that Quiet Time with God on a daily basis? Tell us about some of your creative ways that you have found help you to learn from the Master to remain firm footed.

gail, thank you again for the devotional. when I reflect back almost 2 years ago, I was lost in where to find the quiet time. i’d try different times of the day often. and then i’d try the afternoons, then the evenings but by then the long day had taken it’s toll and although i made time(and it never was quiet, always somebody or something to distract) these times I found to be void in that I could not hear the Lord because the focus was being bombarded with reasons not to focus. I knew that the devil was at it again with me. he knows we are enemies and that he’s still trying to reel me back in. I would not allow it. after about a year and a bit, i have found ‘our’ time and I have to say that like a child that sprouts from year to year, today i have my ‘island’ fully isolated from all distractions. so I get up at 6am every morning(and I am retired so it’s not like I have to go to a job). I find the sweetest time with the Lord is from 6am-12 noon. being an empty nester also could be looked at as a blessing in disguise. i love my children with all that i have but i am now committed to looking after me, my spiritual growth. as far as creative ways, i’d have to say learning the computer(finally) and being blessed to have found this site quite by accident and I thank God for this ‘accident’ as it’s one that doesn’t hurt nor hinder. I think because ‘we’ are naturally ‘habititual’ by nature, for me its the daily discipline and it feels right, it’s not a ‘have to’, it’s a ‘desire’ to feel more and more His love. the Lord and I have our one on one and the rest of the waking hours are done with pleasure rather than it being ‘just another day to get through”. those days are long gone, praise be to God. before retiring for the night I spend time here with all you wonderful, loving, caring ladies which carry me through till morn. when the eyes open, it’s another day of wonder and I find I just want more.

Gail thank you for the Great Devotional and Oh How True It Is. I have shared several times of all the hardships I have been through in my life and
granted not nearly as many at a lot of you out
there I am sure, but for whatever reason God
has allowed us to go through what we have
been through if we can Only think of it as an
opportunity to be able one day to encourage
someone else one day down life’s road. I truly
believe it will give us a whole new prospective
on why we go through those trials. As I have
mentioned before I lost my 15 1/2 yr old
daughter in a car accident but she loved The
Lord and He radiated from her face and actions.
Through Lee-Anna’s death I had a brother come back to the Lord, I met a Christian lady through
this site that lives over 3000 miles from me who
lost her daughter in a car accident just as I had.
Praise The Lord we have become very close email and phone friends, I have been able to identify with how she feels, pray with her and
let her know it’s okay we all go through those
feelings and there is no set time for one to stop
grieving etc. I Praise The Lord for these
opportunities to be able to use a horrible
situation and turn it around and use it for good
and for His Glory. Also Gail mentioned how so
many things can distract us from The Lord and
spending time with Him. One area that has
really been shown to me to watching TV and I
came to the point where I had to ask myself
would I be comfortable knowing that Jesus is
sitting right there beside me watching the same
program I am watching and you know the
answer to a lot of the shows was NO!!! That
sure freed up time to spend with the Lord in His
Word and Prayer. God is so Good to give us
these Gentle reminders in every areas of our
lives to draw us closer and closer to Him so we in turn can be available to be always ready to
be used of Him and That makes me think of two
songs: “Oh To Be Like Him” and “To Be Used Of
God” those are both my hearts desire. Hugs, Linda

Praise the Lord, I learn to put God first in my life and when the storms of life comes.I have a anchor and his name is Jesus. AND the HolySpirit guides and direct me.I Remind myself the joy of the Lord is my strength. And focus on helping someone else who need strength.Becauuse it is not about me it is all about Jesus. We must not let the cares of this world shake our faith,God is in control. God bless and peace be with us.
