Everyone is talking about Katrina Darrell’s American Idol audition last night, but they’re not talking about her voice. Dressed in only a bikini she certainly got noticed. This morning a search for “American Idol + bikini” gets 1.5million hits. If she was looking for her 15 minutes of fame she found it. Whatever happens with the rest of the season, that clip will live on YouTube forever.
Gimmicky outfits have been part of the show from the beginning, although no previous Idol contestant has taken the idea quite so far. I wonder if Katrina considers the audition a success? As I was watching the show with a friend she commented, “maybe a men’s magazine will call” and I wondered which audition we were watching. Perhaps this had nothing to do with American Idol at all.
Granted, Darnell will get to go to Hollywood, but will she go any farther than that? Does she think so little of her talent that she felt it necessary to go to such extremes to get noticed? I’d love to know, in all seriousness, what was going on inside her head.
Showing up in a bikini sent a very clear message, “Don’t judge me on my singing, judge me on this instead.” There is no denying that Darrell has the body for that outfit. With a physique like that she must get attention all the time. I wonder why it wasn’t enough?
Dressing provocatively is certainly nothing new. It gets results, but it comes at a price. Getting noticed is pretty easy, getting respect takes a lot more effort. Maybe Darrell got exactly what she wanted but I can’t help thinking that it was an awfully shortsighted move (to say nothing of ill-advised). Yes, today the eyes of the world are on her, however briefly. But what happens tomorrow when she realizes that she’s turned herself into a punch line? It’s going to take a lot longer than 15 minutes to fix that.

i thought kara trying to make her point by singing on top of her was a bit too desparate. she should have just made her point quietly which may have been more powerful, but as it is i bet katrina feels like she ‘won’ that time.
Wait a second. The judges put a train wreck through to the second round?
Great lines though Claire. The morning after line is a classic.
I found it interesting that it was the 2 male judges who put her through to the next round, while the 2 female judges thought she had a horrible voice…were the judges that blinded by her bikini clad body? I don’t think Darrell will be able to go through the next round in her bikini, so I think she’ll be gone pretty quickly. For someone whose words were so cocky, her actions spoke volumes about her insecurities…she obviously felt her voice alone would not impress. And as a female viewer, I’ve lost all respect for her and wouldn’t vote for her even if she made it through to the finals!
