“Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as He did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father caries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” (Deuteronomy 1:29 – 31)

Sometimes our troubles seem unending. A week can feel like a year if there is intense pain or profound sorrow or inordinate fear. What if that struggle goes on for a year?

The Israelites experienced their share of trouble. They wandered in the desert for forty years; not two weeks, not six months, but forty years. During that time they faced hunger, thirst, discouragement, rebellion, sorrow, sickness, fear and death.

At the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, it is recorded that, finally, the Israelites stood on the verge of entering the Promised Land. Before they entered, God had Moses give them a history lesson.

He reviewed the laws God had given them and reminded them that, “During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.” (Deuteronomy 29:5) He pointed them to the truth of how they had survived their long existence in the desert – God carried them.

There is a lesson for us to learn in the story of the Israelites, whenever we are fearful of the future or weary from our trials.

We are not to look ahead and wonder how much we can endure. Instead we are to look back, remember what God has done in the past, and acknowledge how He has sustained us.

Then, we look to God to carry us, one day at a time.

Oh God, I can see a path in the history of my life and know that You have carried me. Please continue to do so, because I can do nothing without You.

Questions: How has God carried you? Why do we need to be reminded of how God has worked in the past?

I have been consumed with fear lately. Reading this devotional reminded me that I am filling my mind with the world and not with God’s truth. I have been reading the Bible and remembering that throughout history, God is in control and working out His plan. Thank you for these timely and much needed words of encouragement.

    thank you suzanne.
God carried me with such tenderness over the years now that I reflect back. From the tender age of youth till age(let’s say late 40′s) the Lord was there for me and I didn’t know it. He carried me through the biggest trial of my life and at the time I didn’t, for the life of me, know why I scathed through with only minor bumps, bruises and cuts and by rights I should have died, I wanted out of the misery.
now I know that looking bck is good but i don’t dwell on looking back. for me, what’s left of this life, the number of years left, I desire to ””give back””’.
Ephesians 2: 4, 5 says what my heart knows now: ”But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us; even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).”
God has blessed me not because of my merit today but because of His goodness.

Thank you, Suzanne for today’s devotional.
The Lord absolutely carried me when I look back when I had my stroke. From being paralyzed and not able to talk, I am now on disability and able to work out, walk my dog, cook dinner for my husband. I even put up the outside Christmas lights this year. I rely on Him. He is my strength.

Destiny, it was lovely to read your testimony. You obviously listen to God and know Him. I am so thankful that God enabled you to escape a situation that was so dangerous, physically and emotionally. What a lesson this is for women out there who are in the same situation as you described. Praying that your sharing today has helped someone in the same situation.

Linda, hello my friend, I am in agreement with all you had to say. I also can see how God has carried me through some pretty hard times and I survived. Praise the Lord! Looking back on these things and knowing that we can call on Jesus to carry us again and again is such an encouragement. We really have all we need in Him. And it is wonderful how we can use these losses, hurts and trials to encourage and care for others.

My friends, I am asking for prayer today for my step-father, Roger. He has lung cancer and has recently finished chemo and radiation. Last week he had kidney failure and he is back in the hospital. Please pray for his wife, Marilyn, who also had treatment this last year for breast cancer. She is feeling really upset and tired and discouraged. And also my sister, Darla who is also feeling tired as she has been quite involved in his care.

Sorry this is so long, but the devotional was so encouraging today and seemed to apply to all that is going on with my family. Love to all my dear, dear sisters. Donna

Thanks Suzanne for the great devotional.

The Old Testament is great! Quite often I read of the Israelites, grumbling and complaining, and testing God’s plan. They seemed so shortsighted!

Well so am I! Many times I too forget the big picture and focus on the here and now. My grumbling and complaining is one sure fire way to squelch any spiritual growth.

The timing of this devotional was perfect and a great reminder that through Christ, we can soldier on and have joy along the way.

God always carries me through financially. I don’t know how but I always have enough to pay my bills. I don’t have allot but there is always enough through God’s miraculous grace!

  • Linda Rohne says:

I shared yesterday how God has carried me through many trials in my life like the death of my teenage daughter, the death of my first husband at the age of 20 from Open Heart Surgery, Both my parents and now I live like so many with a painful chronic illness But Praise The Lord even though each situation at the time was not easy He was Always there with me to carry me through and for that I am so Thankful. I truly Believe we need to be reminded of how God has worked in the past so we will NEVER EVER Forget that God Never Changes and He can work just as much in our lives today as he did 5, 10, 15 or how many years ago. We also need to be reminded so we remember to use these experiences to share with others so that we might be an encouragement to them in some way and know they are not alone in going through whatever it is they might be going through. It can be such an exciting time when out of such a terrible experience in your life you can take that and use it to encourage, comfort or even lead someone to The Lord. One of my Favorite songs is “To Be Used of God, to Speak, to Sing, to Pray, To Be Used of God to Show Someone The Way etc, etc. Hugs, Linda

  • Destiny says:

God carried me when I was going through an abusive relationship. He allowed me to get out of the situation before I got married. I was so impressed with my ex fiance that I did not see the the subtle abuse until he physically attacked me. I know that it was God who freed me from that situation.
