Stepping into History

Written by Claire Colvin

obamaI saw a headline on CNN.com that read “Monumental expectations for Obama’s inauguration address”. I think they could shorten that to simply “Monumental expectations for Obama”. People are waiting for a miracle.

Barack Obama stepped into a time in history when people desperately wanted something to believe in.  He made us believe and change came to America.  At least that’s what all the signs said.  This is the honeymoon phase of our relationship with Obama, and it is a beautiful thing to see.

When was the last time you saw people dancing in the streets or standing with tears running down their faces as they listened to a politician?  When was the last time regular people planned parties around a political event?  This is history in the making and the excitement of what dreams may come is intoxicating.

Whatever happens in the next four years, it certainly will be historic. Obama’s presidency is poised to contain a lot of firsts – in addition to being the first African American President, his campaign was the first to full realize the potential of an online grassroots movement.  He is the first president-elect to address the nation weekly on YouTube, a habit he is planning to continue as President.  Even his official portrait was the first to be taken on a digital camera.  (I have to admit, that one surprised me.)

It’s clear that there’s history ripe for the picking. In his victory address on November 4th Obama showed that he understands the reality of the Presidency he is taking on.  He said, “The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.”

Hope is a powerful thing.  Whether it is enough to change the problems America is facing is yet to be seen, but that’s a question for another day.  Today we celebrate.  This week something will happen in Washington that has never happened  before.  Can Obama live up to these monumental expectations?  Here’s hoping.

i don’t think this article is honest. America is failing, and Obama has yet to do anything good. So far the only thing he has accomplished is to plunge the US government into another trillion and a half dollars into debt.

so…good job Obama, you are everything we have hoped for.

  • It is really a monumental period that will continue to ring bells in American history.Iam sure he will keep his promises if godfathers will allow him to work At the sametime, terrorism has to be put in check.
We should all join hands to work and network with him thorugh our fervent prayers regularly.
Because nothing is sweeter than success let ask God to continue to give him the wisdom of our Lord Jesus Christ to be able work and succeed.
Obama I join numerous citizens of the world to wish a very successful tenor in and of office.
