BBC Asks: “Does God have a role in the world today?”

Written by Darren Hewer

emptychairsA recent BBC “Have Your Say” question has generated hundreds of replies so far. This should come as little surprise, since it mentions two volatile issues: God and climate change.

God will not intervene to prevent humanity from wreaking disastrous damage to the environment, the Archbishop of Canterbury has warned. What’s your reaction to this?

The comments on the BBC’s site are diverse. Here’s a brief sampling:

“Religion is anthema to a rationale human being.” Jim, Mauritius

“The faults and atrocities of religion are mankind’s and not God’s.” rainbowofchaos

“It’s up to people, not God, (if you believe in such rubbish) to change what happens in the world, and saving the environment is one of them.” Emily

“I sure hope so – who else do we turn to when things can go so spectacularly wrong?” Sue

“religion has no place in modern society” mark, Toronto

“God certainly has a role for those that believe in him, but not for those that don’t. simple really” Andrew

  • Mary, thank you for your question, this is my opinion on this issue. The examples you cite (Catholic, Lutheran) are all examples of Christian denominations, so while they may differ on peripheral issues, they still agree on the central truths of the Christian faith. So while I would not be too concerned about the small differences within the Christian faith, the main concern is differences between faiths.

Gregory Koukl has an insightful 1 minute video clip here where he talks about this issue: Do All Roads Lead to God: Is Every Religion True?

There’s also an article here called The Uniqueness of Jesus which explores what’s so special about Jesus.

Hope this helps, if you or anyone else would like to talk to someone privately & confidentially they can always contact us by email.

Hey, yeah im the same guy who wrote above. The role of god is to provide a counseling that is it, as long as there are vacuums in the space not taken up by counselors, laws, and general parents who don’t teach their children about ethics then yes there is still space for God or gods to exist. Religion is needed for the people’s not the other way around. There will be always people so very broken and maimed by the world that they will turn to anything that will harm them or others. But religion is like a second choice they can follow and many do. I am agnostic but still a part of my upbringing has touched me. I can tell you that religion is very useful as long as it is not used for political, judicial and other rational thinking. It also gives a cultural uniqueness to people. :) keep smiling everyone and yeah don’t do things to others that you dont want to be done on yourself like Jasmine said..

God is someone you rely on, someone you need in dire conditions to talk to when you dont have anyone, but he is not a driver of this world. I have prayed all my life that someone be as happy as possible and all her pain come to me instead of her, but the reality is always something everyone should see too. Maybe she is fine, maybe she is gone, who knows but prayer is something you just do so that … so that… love has some meaning in this world and not just words. You believe in things and non-rational elements cause trust and faith is all you have in such obscure conditions of the world.

  • Do good,See goodand Be good.
    This the way toGOD.
Never try to harm other’s ,If you try to harm other’s then they will never leave you as they will do as you did to them …..so please friends of the world never hurt girls -boys as you dominate them …..anyways jesus will alive once again and no one can touch his spirit ….as they killed him in very bad way ….

  • I do not need your garlands and fruits. They are not genuinely yours. Give me something that is yours, something which is clean and fragrant with the perfume of virtue and innocence and washed in the tears of repentance.

Mere formal worship or mechanical routine performance of rituals cannot induce God to recite in the heart.

Merely going to the temple and offering worship offering a coconut, expecting some reward — all these are a wrong way of understanding devotion
    .

I do whatever for Lord Jesus , I always pray for his health so that no one can harm his health as I pray for him in a newari rituals , amen

Some folks will want to approach this question from the scientific point of view. Where science cannot deal in exactitudes, it is appropriate to look at the weight of evidence and rely on the science of mathmatical probability.

This brings us to a prior question: “Did God have a role in the world in the past?” For more on this question, we can examine the weight of evidence in this site:
    http://ultimatequestions.org

If the weight of evidence favours the probability that God had a role in the world in the past, we can extrapolate that the weight of evidence supports the conclusion that God has a role in the world today.

  • sareena says:

Yes, God is always there watching over us. He is just and a powerful God. Those who believe and put their trust in Him, He will surely make a difference in their lives.

  • anca says:

yes,God has a big role in this world but,He gives us the liberty to choose between this world and a better world.
God is watching us when we are saed, when our world crahes but He can’t do nothing because of the “free will”.Yes,He is powerful but just like us,He needs us.
He had suffered like a human, not like a God.His human side needs us.
So,the world will change if we will change. If we will be more compassions and will give more, then yes the world will change.
Believe in God and we will be saved!

  • Shawnee says:

i think God plays a major role in our lives. He’s always there when we need him. When we are in our lowest moments he lifts us up. He helps us get through life. It’s amazing the miracles that God does for us.

  • ryan says:

if he exists then he does “play a role”. The question – How does God (creator) play a role? arises.
I think Through us humans he plays a role and changes things so.
