“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might …” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
How do you define serving God? Are you like me, tempted to think that certain works, like teaching Bible studies and speaking to crowds, are more important than having someone in for dinner?
In the movie, Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddle’s sister, Jenny, felt her brother was putting too much emphasis on his running and not enough on mission work in China. A confrontation between Eric and his sister ensued. “Jenny, I know God made me for a purpose,” Eric said. “He made me for China. But He also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.”
I think what Eric was saying is that all of life is sacred and whatever God gives us to do at the time, let’s do it whole-heartedly to the glory of God. It may be going to school, raising children, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, writing magazine articles, speaking to women’s groups, visiting those in a Care Home, inviting someone home for lunch …all of it, if done whole-heartedly, is a service to God. The Bible says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Eric Liddle lived that way. After the Olympics in 1924, he went to China where he taught school and organized sporting events. During WWII he was placed in a Chinese prison camp where he continued to serve God whole-heartedly by helping the elderly, teaching Bible classes, arranging games and teaching the children science. He died in the camp on February 21, 1945 at the age of 43, just four months before liberation.
Father, whatever this day brings, I want to live it whole-heartedly for Your glory.
Question: What has God given you to do today? How can you serve Him with all your heart?

I quit my job 3 years ago to help my daughter and her young husband by watching their son. Daycare was extremely expense but I charged them a tiny fee just to teach them responsibility and to cover extra activities I did with my grandson. Now I watch him and his little sister. Sometimes I wonder if I should have quit my job, which I miss, but I believe this is what God wanted me to do, to help teach these little ones about being children of God. My grandson sees me working on prayer shawls etc and asks about what I am doing. He told me “You are a great grandma for doing that for people. Will you make me one if I get sick?” Got to love the children! Praise God for my ability to be home with them.
I sure needed this devotional. I have committed my self to praying for 30 people’s prayer request a week along with my own personal prayers and also reaching out to the elderly where I live. I try to make time each day to read the devotionals. But if I don’t pick up the Bible and read each day. I feel like I am doing wrong to God. This devotional makes me see that in living God’s Words and doing it with all your heart then it is just as could as reading the Bible. I need daily verses from the Bible and I do get that. But often I can’t seem to read the Bible for a long period of time. I use to when I was a Sunday School teacher and in Bible classes. This devotional helps to secure the importants to serve others is to serve God.
Being a very busy graduate student, this devotional really spoke to my heart. I needed it to help reinforce the fact that God put me here for a reason and even though things get difficult in my life he has great plans for me. It’s hard to stay spiritually focused sometimes, especially with the many different obligation this world asks of us. But knowing that I have a purpose for Him throughout all the busy work helps a lot. Thank you so much for this devotional and God Bless.

helen, thank you for this devotional. God has given me His grace once more. each day I wake is another day to celebrate His love. I serve Him each day in being the best that I can be. I read this in study this morning. it said, ”When praying, it’s better to have a heart without words than words without heart (see Romans 8). i’v been distant lately in prayer and I believe this came to my heart for a reason.
