Christians do bad things

Written by Darren Hewer

scoldingIt’s no secret that Christians have, over the last several thousand years, done a lot of bad things. Crusades. Inquisitions. Witch hunts. And we continue to do a lot of bad things today, both individually and collectively. In fact, I think Christians should take a moment to apologize to the world: “I’d like to apologize on behalf of myself and my fellow Christians”, we might say, who have, throughout history, done some pretty rotten things supposedly in the name of Jesus Christ. I’m sorry. This is not what Jesus taught.”

But, while it definitely is sad that such things occur, what does this prove about whether the Christian faith is true or not? This shouldn’t be too surprising that such things happen, because even though we are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) we know that we continue to sin. (1 John 1:8-10) The Apostle Paul (a model Christian if there ever was one) even calls himself the worst of all sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15-16)

If someone objects to Christianity because of the bad things Christians have done, a reasonable response to “Christians to bad things.” is to simply ask … “So what?” Ask them how the fact that Christians do bad things proves anything about the truth of the Christian faith. Sin, after all, is not a Christian problem, it’s a human problem. And just because people cause problems, that doesn’t that mean that God is not great.

It might also be worthwhile to point out some of the amazing good things that Christians have done and continue to do in the world. For example, Global Aid Network is a Christian aid organization which “exists to demonstrate the love of God, in word and deed, to hurting and needy people around the world, through relief and development projects.” These and thousands of other organizations quietly and faithfully serve around the world every day, with little or no recognition, because of their love for God and faithfulness to serve him by serving others.

One Response to “Christians do bad things”

  • Patricia says:

I liked what you said, and I too have found myself apologizing on more than one occasion for the fault of “Christians” We are Believers in Jesus Christ, yet we still sin. The difficulty is when you are faced with a situation where a non-believer portrays more Christ like behavior than a believer. So you asked Have you ever had someone challenge you with this issue? Yes, but I find it is often easier to talk about this with the non-believer, or the un-churched, than it is to address “sin in the camp” of a church. To tell you the truth I think my odds as a “believer” are better out in the streets than in the four walls of the church.
The Good Lord gifts us all differently, yet we are still to come into His image, I say we just need to embrace who it is that He has called us to be. The rest will all work out in the end. It has to, because He promised it would.
