From Death to Life
Do you know Jesus?
“Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life” (John 5:24).
Read: John 5:24-30
My neighbor Ruby didn’t grow up attending church like I did, so I hesitated to invite her to our home Bible study. But when I did, she surprised me and came. I encouraged her to read the Gospel of John, and she read it straight through! I was thrilled when she believed Jesus’ words and accepted Him as her Savior and Lord.
But not everyone who encounters the words of Jesus believes. In John 5, the religious people who heard Jesus speak wanted to kill Him. Certainly Jesus made some astonishing claims that no other person alive could make. He claimed that eternal life comes through believing in Him (v. 24), that His voice could raise the dead (vv. 25, 28-29), and that He had authority to judge (vv. 27, 30).
Jesus’ declarations are both wonderful and sobering; wonderful because Jesus came to give eternal life to all who believe in Him; sobering because He will also come as judge over the good and evil that humans have done (v. 29).
I am thankful I grew up in a godly home where I learned that Jesus died for my sins. When I accepted Him as a young girl, I passed from death to life. I continue to rejoice that Jesus is my Savior, and that I need not fear judgment. I’m also thankful that this became the experience of Ruby, who passed away several years after she became a Christian.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the hope of eternal life. Help me to glorify you and tell others how to pass from death to life.
Questions: This Easter week why don’t you renew your commitment to the Living Lord Jesus!
