Why Pray in Jesus’ Name?

Written by La Von (Petey) Prater

Are you looking for peace in your life? We want to pray for you.

Join us for our Daily Devotional Chat today in our Women’s Chatroom at 10:30am EDT.

They peer up at me, two identical little faces, three year old minds poised innocently on the precipice of life’s greatest dilemma. “Mommy, who’s the oldest, you or Mrs. Jackson?”

“Mrs. Jackson.”

“Then she’s the boss, right?”

The twins know parents are in charge. Their question isn’t “who’s the oldest?” It’s “who has authority?”

Ah, from the lips of a child, the question of the ages. Who is the boss? Is someone in charge of us, of the world? Who has the right, the power and the ability to be in control? Is there anyone who can meet need and answer prayers? To whom should we pray?

The Supremacy of Christ

We pray in Jesus’ name because he is God and was coexistent with God in the beginning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” (John 1:1, 2).

Jesus definitely qualifies as oldest.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:15-20).

Jesus definitely qualifies as boss of our lives.

Jesus states, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:1). He promises us, “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father” (John 14:13). “Whatever you ask in my name”…the authority is his to do it.

We pray in Jesus name because He loves us and His character is trustworthy. He is pure love and cannot withhold from us; love compels His actions. He is all knowledge and wisdom. He knows what I need and how to best meet that need with his all-power. “Christ Jesus…is at the right hand of God…interceding for us” (Romans 8:34). Astonishing, God prays for me, for you!

We pray in Jesus’ name because he commanded his children to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).

We pray in Jesus’ name because we’re helpless, unable to change our selves or our world. To pray is to partner with God, allowing His mind, message, and might to flow through us and transform us. To pray is to participate in miracles.

Thank you Jesus, for the power of Your name!

Questions: Why pray in Jesus’ name? Why would we not pray in that all-mighty name?

What privilege is ours to be children of the King. With Christ we have been given all things. We are more than conquerors thru Christ who loves us and leads us from glory to glory. This old world is falling apart but those who know him draw close and worship even as darkness settles over the nations of the world. He has come to gather His own home to Himself. Until then, let us keep doing wonderworks in His power and His name for His glory. petey

We pray to God the Father, through Jesus the Son, for He is our access to the Father. Without Jesus as our intercessor, we cannot approach the Father, for we are separated from Him by spiritual ‘death,’ which occurred at the Fall. Our sin nature has deemed us unworthy to commune with a holy God, and so the Father, in loving cooperation with His Son, devised the plan of redemption for mankind. Therefore, when we pray ‘in Jesus’ name,’ we humbly recognize that, apart from the righteousness bestowed upon us by Jesus’ shed blood on the cross, we are unworthy of God’s favor, and the privilege of intimacy with Him! While we can surely pray to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it is important to know that They work in unison, for the glory of Jesus, and it is only because of Jesus’ sacrifice that we can approach any of Them!

Thank you, Lord, for loving us so! Your willingness to die for us, that we may have life, mystifies us! We praise You for being our Way-Maker, for being our Bridge to the Father! In Your precious, holy Name, Amen!

    Dear hearts,
Yes, we serve a Triune God, three in one.(Like an egg that is composed of shell, white, yolk – 3 distinct parts but one in totality.) We can pray to any one of them. The children’s song I sang in Sunday School said: To the Father, thru the Son,(He said I am the door, the way) in the Holy Spirit, with a clean heart say each prayer, and our God will hear it. God sent Jesus to mankind to take our place – a standin for our sin – a substitute for me when I accept Him. He can be my substitute because His blood is pure and acceptable to the Father for the sins of many. He lived a sin free life, then after death and resurrection rose to Heaven again to intercede for us all. He then sent the Holy Spirit to live in us and be with us until His return. Each person of the Godhead does a different job. But we can pray to all or one and they will hear and answer us. Blessings on your faith filled prayers. May He use us all who believe to hasten His return. Petey

LOL! What can one say when faced w/the obvious truth & reality of Jesus Christ and HIS power and authority, except AMEN! Thank you Jesus that we can lean on YOU, trust in YOU and know YOU hear our prayers and petitions and desire to fill them. Praising Him!
Thanks for reminding us of ‘authority’
