“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
There are hundreds of thousands of books in the world, many of which are thoughtful, hopeful and helpful, but all of them are words of men.
On the other hand, the Bible is not simply an engaging story, with a cleverly devised plot. Nor is it merely a collection of wise sayings from which to gain direction in the decisions of life. It isn’t a massive self help book with good suggestions to help you change your life.
Truly, it is the Word of God.
The writer of Hebrews calls it living and active. “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
Thus, we can not disregard something in the Bible because it challenges our thinking or our lifestyle. We must wrestle with it, knowing that God chose this way to reveal Himself to us.
When the Bible is read with an honest desire to seek God, the words leap from the page. It convicts of sin, softens hard hearts, heals deep wounds, calms fears, refreshes the spirit, renews strength, provides courage, instills hope and more.
It works in us who believe, just as it did thousands of years ago in the Thessalonians. The evidence of that work shows in our lives for others to see.
Awesome God, I want your word to be at work in me. I know that it is living and active, as so often I read just what I need to hear that day, whether a word of challenge or of hope. Thank you for Your Word.
Questions: Have you accepted the gospel and the Bible as it really is – the word of God? How has the word of God been at work in you?

suzanne, thank you. this devotional was so full of warmth for me. I do accept the gospel and the Bible as God’s Word, His Divine truth. When I find myself struggling with trial I turn to His Word because I know that know matter what, I will find comfort within. ”Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the Lord.”-Psalm 31:24. I had just read this passage this morning and it re-enforced a lowliness I have been feeling as of late.
i am not getting comments on devotionals
Great post Suzanne! There is no way that the topic you chose for today can be overstressed! Many times we read Scripture and because we are in this sinful flesh, we really don’t grasp what we are reading.
For example, I’ll take John 14:6. Do we really believe this??? If we do, why is it that our Creator takes a back seat to that aspirin we reach for to relieve our headache. Is He our Creator?… Can an aspirin do better that the Most High God who created the heavens and the earth… and us.
Nowhere in Scripture does it say that we should delve into our minds to heal the hurts and pains we have from our past. Yet psychology and psychiatry are accepted as “sound biblical doctrine” in the “cure” for our sin nature, which Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, our Maker surely has the cure for.
Truly, our God is the living God, and the Word of God is pure and without error. It is a shame that we corrupt it too often with our inaccurate perceptions of His truths.
I like to think of the Bible as God’s ‘love letter’ to us, written by men, yet fully-inspired by and under the divine direction of the Holy Spirit! It truly is life-changing, and as we hunger to know God more, He opens the pages to reveal His splendor, His creative and redemptive majesty, and our hope in Jesus! Julie, the Bible doesn’t save us — it just points us to the One Who does — Jesus!
I find it hard to take what happened so long ago and put it into my everyday life. I do try to find the meaning out of a story and use this as a tool to help build my lifestyle. I believe it is very important to look at the bible as a tool, that will help repair, replenish, and save you.
The top portion of the devotional (about men’s sexual integrity) sounds to be the topic of the whole devotional, but has nothing to do with it. My gander is that it expresses how real and how alive the word is; how it affects our life. Might want to strategically place that ‘sexual integrity’ link near the bottom or directly under the main topic of the devotional, so people don’t get the wrong idea about what they might be reading.
