The Millennial Generation

Written by Tracy

An interesting report came out a while ago on the CBS News show 60 minutes. In The Millennials Are Coming reporter Morley Safer comments on the generation of young people who are now graduating from school and moving into the work force. Motivated more by their desire to have a life outside of work than a paycheck, gone are the days of working 9 to 5 in an office, week after week at the same job. In fact, it’s gotten to the point where companies are hiring consultants to learn how to deal with this generation of workers who do not wish to conform to their “old” ways. Safer writes:

“The workplace has become a psychological battlefield and the millennials have the upper hand, because they are tech savvy, with every gadget imaginable almost becoming an extension of their bodies. They multitask, talk, walk, listen and type, and text. And their priorities are simple: they come first.”

Do you feel this report accurately reflects the mindset of the millennials? Should workplaces be expected to accommodate an employee’s desire for a balanced life? How much would be too much?
