“You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.” John 15:16, NRSV
Do you know the joy of being chosen?
One Christmas, many years ago when we still lived in Germany, I was chosen to be Santa Claus for my grade six class at school. At first I could hardly believe it. Me—a tall, skinny refugee child, painfully shy to the point of hardly ever saying a word– had been singled out for the most important role in our Christmas celebration. I still remember the excitement of entering the class room in my Santa suit. Mind you, this Santa had no chubby red cheeks, no big belly laugh, and no sack over her shoulder bulging with toys. But I was Santa, nonetheless.
Why was I chosen? I’ll never know. Perhaps it was my height for European Santas are habitually long and lean. Perhaps the teacher wanted to boost my self esteem. Whatever the reason, the fact is, I was chosen. And I’ll never forget the joy of it.
Our Scripture today tells us that God has chosen us. From the billions of people living on earth, God has chosen us to be his children. Children who are cherished, accepted, and believed in.
Children with access privileges to the Father and an eternal inheritance.
Being chosen also carries with it responsibilities. My responsibilities as Santa were minimal: giving a box of wax crayons to each child. Our responsibilities as children of God are more significant: We are to represent the Father upon earth, to make known his truths, and to do his works. We are to bear fruit, fruit that will last and glorify our Father in heaven.
Dear God, I thank you for choosing me. I want to represent you well in this corner of the world where I live. Help me to live in such a way that people will see Jesus in me.
Question: What responsibilities come with being one of God’s chosen ones?
