“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1Corinthians 10:31).

Do you sometimes wonder if your life is making a difference? After all, it’s filled with routine activities. Nobody’s looking. Nobody’s clapping. Right?
When an audience is clapping, it’s easy to feel that one’s work has significance, but what happens when the stage is bare…the crowds are gone? The Gaithers, who for over four decades have brought heartfelt music to many large audiences continue the song, “when no one else is watching me, I need You more than words can say; tomorrow’s such a daily day…”

How do you serve the Lord when it’s such an ordinary day?

When my stage is bare, I remind myself that God is looking for faithfulness in “whatever my hand finds to do” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

I want to do everything whole-heartedly as unto the Lord, whether it’s gardening, speaking with a neighbor over the fence, teaching a Sunday School class, knitting an afghan, entertaining company…I want to be faithful even when nobody is looking.

There is no such thing as insignificant work when it’s done for the Lord.

God is looking for faithful obedience in all of life.

Father, thank you that you are orchestrating my life. I want every day to be to your glory and for the benefit of others.

Question: Can you sanctify this day by doing “everything your hand finds to do” wholeheartedly as unto God?

I think we can mistakenly associate man’s recognition as the measure of our work for the Lord and for His glory. What we do when no one is watching is far more reflective of our motives in serving Him. The Lord tells us in Matthew 6 to be careful about doing ‘acts of righteousness’ for others to see, for our reward will be earthly (man’s recognition.) We are called to be ‘living sacrifices,’ living our lives as “spiritual acts of worship.” (Romans 12:1) Therefore, whatever we do, we do it as unto Him!

Thanks so much for this wonderful message! I am a social worker, and I recently took a job that is more administrative than direct service. When working in the field, I often got a sense that I was on the “front lines” and very actively doing the Lord’s work. Although now, as I swim through a sea of paperwork every day, I tend to wonder; Am I serving others in a way that pleases God? These devotionals are truly a blessing and help to give me a sense of purpose amidst the trivial tasks that fill my day.

This is an incredible concept! I am a graduate student and I am currently working on my thesis… not working any other job, or even attending other classes for the summer. I have wondered in having this as the thing that takes up the majority of my time, how I can glorify God in my daily routine. God can be glorified as I sit on my couch researching on my computer, and he can be glorified in how I care for my dogs. Thank you for this today!
