Top Books to Read Before it’s Too Late!

Written by Darren Hewer

bookstackLately we’ve talked a lot about great books for summer reading, first in our A Few Good Reads video discussion, and then in our Summer Reading post. Now we want to hear from you: What books do you recommend?

There are plenty of “best” lists out there, but any such list will be incomplete. For one thing, what criteria would be used for such a list? Literary eloquence? Social impact? Perfect prose?

What about sales figures? On the list of best-selling books of all time, we find The Lord of the Rings sitting right beside Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Topping out the list: The Bible with over 6 billion (!) copies.1 If you’re interested in reading what may be the most popular book of all time, you can read it online, or explore Why should I read a 2000 year old book? or How do I approach reading the Bible?

What are some of your favorite books? Share them with us and our readers in the comments!

Two that I find absolutely stellar are John Crowley’s Little, Big and Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of the Dog. The latter is clever, gentle, and laugh-out-loud funny; the former is simply brilliant, and one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read.

So many books, so little time. I just finished the Cellist of Sarajevo which was haunting and beautiful. Last summer I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and it is still in my head. For the beach I like Marian Keys and Pat Conroy and Lee Child.
