Water = Life

gainwellAccording to Global Aid Network (GAiN), “Worldwide, every 20 seconds, a child dies from water-related diseases.” While in North America we’re concerned about where our bottled water comes from, in many other places getting access to any disease-free water at all can be a challenge.

GAiN is one of several organizations which is working to make a difference in areas that desperately need clean water. Recently GAiN hit a significant milestone in their work:

It has been 4 years since GAiN first started drilling in Benin. February 2009 brought a major milestone as GAiN Canada drilled the 100th water well in Benin. … People routinely do go without easy access to water, and that water is most often ridden with diseases from unseen bacteria or parasites or contaminated by toxins through its exposure to traffic: animals, machines, and people.

(GAiN Report)

One villager commented: “Before we had this well, we had to walk far to get water that was brown and dirty, and sometimes it had dried up completely [but] water from this well is close by, easy to get, and is always clean! We can be healthy again!”

Well-building programs help communities becoming healthier and self-sustaining. If you would like more information about GAiN, an article about their work is available here: Global Aid Network. Or you can visit their site at www.globalaid.net If you want to get involved, you can contribute to GAiN online.

Have you ever contributed to well-building programs? Do you think such programs make a long-lasting difference in the towns & villages?
