“Then Jesus said to them, ‘most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed’” (John 6:53 & 55, NKJV).
On the day that Jesus spoke these things many of His disciples found it hard to receive, were offended, and went back to their old ways and did not walk with Him anymore.
We read in John 1:1 & 14 that “the Word became flesh,” Jesus is the Word. Jesus also referred to Himself as the “Bread of Life” (John 6:48). So the Bible (the Word) is like saying we have “Jesus in print.” He is the Word and He is the Bread of Life. When we read our Bibles we are eating in of Jesus, and if you believe that “you are what you eat,” we become more like Him as we take in His Word.
Typically, as we eat in the natural realm, we become thirsty. As we eat in the spiritual realm (read our Bibles), the Word begins to reveal to us areas of our lives that need to be forgiven and changed. Here is where we drink the blood as we confess our sins and choose to receive God’s forgiveness (Matt. 26:27-28). As we eat in of His flesh (the Word) and drink His blood (receive forgiveness) we walk in the fullness of the Spirit and experience true life.
“Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. (John 6:54 & 56, NKJV).
Questions: How do you understand “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”? How does one walk in the Spirit?

I am always encouraged whenever I take the time to read the devotionals. No, I do not read them everyday. But God always uses them to speak to me where I am at that time. I have been neglecting reading in the word of late. This gentle reminder that Jesus is the Word and my need to eat and drink of the word everday encourages me to pick up my Bible. Thanks be to God and this ministry.
i walk in the Spirit when i make my choices. We are confronted with endless decisions every single day. i may humanly come up with all kinds of justifications for the “why” i’m hating someone or seeking revenge for injustices done to me. i could make the choice to repay evil for evil yet this is not “walking in the Spirit”. i may want to numb my emotional pain with Vodka yet God says,”Do not be drunk with wine but with the Spirit.” (this is a form of the meaning yet it also means do not be so over come and vexed with emotional disturbances and physical eircumstances that you start maing choices out of fear and doubt)) When i ask the LORD for HIS peace and receive it, for me this is also walking in the Spirit. Paul said,”it is no longer I but Christ who lives within me…” When i am emptied of myself and all my human reactions (being offended, assuming, taking things personally)and offer HIM my trust and have confidence in what HE speaks to me, this is walking in the Spirit. Does this all take LOTS of practice? You better believe it! Glory to HIS name!
YOUR REPLY IS JUST WHAT MY DAUGHTER NEEDED TODAY. SHE JUST LOST THE MAN SHE WAS ENGAGED TO DUE TO SUDDEN DEATH AND I THINK THIS WILL REALLY HELP HER. I AM PRINTING THIS OUT FOR HER.
LIVING WITH PEOPLE IS NOT EASY. I WAS ONCE TOLD THAT I AM WHAT I EAT. SO THEN IF I READ GOD’S WORD I AM FED GOOD WHOLESOME SPIRITUAL ADVICE THAT TEACHES ME HOW TO COPE WHEN I LIVE WITH THOSE THAT ARE NOT ALWAYS EASY.
MY POINT IS I FIND WITHIN WHEN I NEED IT I CAN BE GRACEFUL, BECAUSE JESUS WAS AND IS AND CONTINUES TO BE GRACEFUL TOWARDS ME.
EVE, LONDON.
I understand eating the flesh as living in God’s word and trusting in Him to resolve all our daily struggles, which is often hard for all of us who are born sinners. It is a reminder that without Christ there is no life, drinking in the blood reminds that when we are thirsty the blood of Jesus, through which we are forgiven, is sufficient to quench our thirst. Thank you for the devotional I certainly needed it as a remind of who I am in Christ and that without him I am lot. To Trisha and Nina Read Psalm 37: 1-8 that encourages us to refrain from Anger

You know I had never thought of it like this, until I had read up on it.It does make a lot of sense to do!When you eat of the body then you are taking in his words, and to drink of his blood you are walking in his footsteps.Glory in the most highest. In Jesus name.Amen
I remember a number of years ago, even tho’ I understood what this passage meant… (as if I can fully understand all that the Holy Spirit has given us in Scripture).. anyhow I remember how this was a most difficult concept to grasp… eating and drinking Jesus… it was cannibalism. I thought, “No wonder the disciples turned away. This is so hard to understand!!!” Yes, it is. BUT.. what a precious truth for us as Christians… The more we ingest the Word and be cleansed by His blood, the more Christ becomes part of us, even as God is in Christ and Christ is in God. Am I saying this correctly?
yes ilva you said it well. god bless to you, eve london
what about the concept of holy communion? is it still related to the same eating of his body and drinking of his blood to have life?
HI CHINENYE, holy communion is i think the same thing… i just think it is a different name.
to have communion is to have and to seek fellowship with the lord. so then if you seek to have a relationship/fellowship with the lord who is holy..then it is the same.
we eat and drink of his body and blood, as we wish to maintain our connection with him.
so to seek to have fellowship with the lord is to seek to have his life still within us.
yes it is the same thing. we love the lord and he gave us a way to come to him, to seek him in all deepness becasue he loves us.
