Reuniting A House Divided

We’ve all read 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” but what happens if you became a Christian after you got married?

It’s this question that Nancy Kennedy faces in her article “My Husband Doesn’t Share my Faith” and I have to admit, it’s a side of that verse I had not considered before.  What do you do when it seems like your wedding vows are standing in opposition to Scripture?

Nancy has lived this question for over 20 years and I love her words to other women in the same situation.  She writes:

“As evidenced throughout the Bible, God is in the habit of saving families. That gives me great hope.”

God is all about reconciliation.  For everyone who is living with a spouse or a child or a parent who does not believe, believe this: it is God’s desire that the person you love be saved.  But if it happens, it will happen in God’s timing and not yours or mine.  That can be a tough truth to swallow.

It’s tempting to think that I can pray hard enough to sway the hand of God on my schedule.   God does hear our prayers and they are powerful.  But the timing of all things in the universe is still His.  He invites us into the work that He is doing but ultimately, it is His work.

Nancy has a wonderful set of practical suggestions for anyone who is praying for an unbelieving loved one.  If this is you today, take heart.  God sees you.  He sees the one you love and He has heard your cries.  As Nancy put it, “Never give up hope. God offers everyone the same gift of salvation and eternal life. Some choose to accept it, and others don’t. But all who accept the gift do so in God’s timing, not ours. God knows what He’s doing.”

There is a lot of comfort in that last sentence – God knows what He’s doing.  I encourage you to read Nancy’s article and see how you can incorporate her ideas into your life.  It’s not an easy road, but you don’t have to walk it alone.  If you’d like to talk to someone and pray with someone, we have mentors available by email 24/7.  Just send us an email and a mentor will contact you.
