Years ago when I was still in university, I was sitting in my friend’s room, idly staring at one of the posters hanging on her wall. The poster contained many quotations about love. Most of the “love quotes” were pretty cringe-worthy and hardly memorable.
But one of them caught my attention. Years later I read it again, the second time in a much different context. See if you recognize it:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

You probably didn’t even have to read past the first sentence to recognize 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 did you? It’s one of the most well known pieces of scripture, if not for its profundity and eloquence, at least due to its ubiquitous use at weddings.
I didn’t recognize its source when I first read it because I was not a Christian at the time. But later, after accepting Christ, I read it again in my Bible, and thought back to that earlier time. This time, knowing the context of God’s entire revealed word to make sense of what it really meant, the meaning behind it became far greater than the sort of sappy romance usually associated with the word “love.”
“What is God’s definition of love?” It’s an important question for Christians, especially this time of year.
