As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 10:11, quoting Isaiah 28:16)
Cindy Klassen is a Canadian speed skater who captured five Olympic medals in Turin in 2006, winning gold in the 1500m race. Due to her performance, she was also awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canadian athlete of the year.
This year, however, unfortunately her Olympic results haven’t matched her previous success. Likely due in part to double-knee reconstruction surgery she wen through last year, Klassen finished 14th in the 3000m race this year.
If a person’s confidence and sense of worth is based on their own accomplishments, their self-image will fluctuate wildly from day to day. Sometimes (when we do well) we will feel great, and other times, (when we do less well) we’ll feel terrible.
Here’s a short video of Cindy talking about where her confidence comes from (in particular starting around 1:30):
As I watched, I thought of the apostle Paul’s constant assurance in the book of Romans that we should have full confidence in trusting God alone. “Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” (Romans 5:2, NLT) This is the solid rock on which we stand, which won’t be moved by the shifting sands of our own performance.
If you were Cindy, how would you feel after this disappointing performance? Are there any scriptures which give you confidence when you’re feeling insufficient? Please feel free to share them with us in the comments.

Thank you Darren for the overwhelming scriptures and messages.Yes, I agree with your meassage that we have to build our faith in him if we are dissapointed or lacking in something. I thank the holy spirit, cos right now I am in a situation where there is nothing left in our fridge to eat, and no bus fare for the kids and me, but I THANK MY FATHER, for he is my source & supplier and he has continued to supply me daily with my needs. In
Matt 11;28,”COME TO ME, ALL OF YOU WHO ARE TIRED FROM CARRYING HEAVY LOADS, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST”.I continued to recite his words and build my faith in him stronger that I receive blessings from him now.
